Rate calculator (Reducing Ping)

Fantastic guide! Helped me for all my source games!

Please note that most speed test results are in megabits per second. We need kilobytes per second. You can easily convert megabits to megabytes by dividing the number of megabits by 8 and then you can convert that to kilobytes by multiplying the number of megabytes by 1024.
There you go :)

Sorry for the necro but this really is a great thread.
However, http://dodnetwork.com/rates.htm seems to be gone. In fact the whole dodnetwork site appears to be down. I've tried some Google but I can't seem to find an alternate rate calculator. Anyone know of one?

Thread updated: Spidey made a website that can do exactly the same thing as the original website, thanks Spidey!

OMG awesomeburgermushroomandswiss! Ping dropped from 46 to 35. FPS shot up from 20-30 to 90-120 :O

can someone tell me what the default number is or how i could reset all these commands incase I put them in wrong.

Frisky, since I assume you have never messed with these settings then the factory defaults are rather easy to determine. Join a server, open your console, and enter in the following commands:
Code:
cl_updaterate
cl_cmdrate
rate
cl_interp
And write down the results.

As you may or may not know, entering a command without a value returns the current value. Thus, while
Code:
bind mouse1 +attack
binds your primary mouse button to execute a facestab,
Code:
bind mouse1
tells you what you primary mouse button is currently bound to, if anything.

So entering
Code:
cl_updaterate
will tell you what it is set to by default. Just write those down someplace safe...or post them in this thread.

This calculator is good, but a little aggressive on a few of the settings for some people. If you run into choke (the most likely problem) after using these suggested settings, try decreasing them in 10% increments until you achieve the desired effect.

Using this did help me up a few of my rates and drop my ping by about 5% on average.
