Well the ISP sucks and the DNS server is absolutely pathetic being down for around 95% of the time. I'm trying to manually change my DNS to a better one, preferably CIRA's or Level3's.

So I need help setting up the DNS suffix list and the DNS server's IP adress to use.

On windows XP. Can use either Windows to configure or thinkvantage.

A few questions first... Are you using wired or wireless? It's pretty simple but if you want to change it for all computers on your network, you need to change the DNS settings on your DHCP scope that is handing out your IP/DNS. By the way, I suggest level3 (4.2.2.2, 4.2.2.3) or OpenDNS (208.67.222.222, 208.67.220.220).

I realize this is unlikely but not impossible since you are mentioning the suffix list, but if your computer is part of a domain, we will need to change the forwarders on your domain DNS or on the DHCP scope depending on the situation. If you statically set your DNS on your machine while it's part of a domain, you'll find that you will not be able to log in to the domain either upon reboot, or when your domain login cache expires (all depending on domain policy) since it will never be able to contact the domain controller via the FLZ of your domain.

But before I keep teaching the inner workings of DNS on a domain, let's just find out if your computer is part of a domain :P

I'm behind a router and we also are on wireless internet. Likely the changes will need to be made on the router or the radio.

Well before I do anything else ill give you my current ipconfig.

Doesn't look like you're on an active directory domain. You don't need to worry about your suffix, it should resolve itself. You should make the change on your DHCP scope on your router so it will take effect on all machines on your network, but this will do it for just your Lenovo's wireless adapter. Just copy and paste each one of these lines into your command prompt and it will change your DNS to level3 for your wireless adapter and your wireless adapter only:

netsh interface ip set dns "Wireless Network Connection" static 4.2.2.2
netsh interface ip add dns "Wireless Network Connection" 4.2.2.3 index=2

Run "ipconfig /all" again and you should see the DNS change. You may want to run "ipconfig /flushdns" to purge any existing DNS cache.

Let me know if you have any problems.
