Does anyone here know exactly how to use it? I wanna be able to save as an avi. I'm hoping source recorder is more memory friendly than drape. Because 3.1gb for 4 minutes of recording at 25 fps seems not right

Your best bet would be to ask the media guys how to convert .dem files or how to edit them

I'm fairly sure there's a way to do it straight to uncompressed avi

here

this site is for tf2 but this works in all source games

http://tf2wiki.net/wiki/Help:Recording_demos

it can dump to a mpeg or avi or you can just dump the frames to tga's and the audio to a wav and get virtualdub to put it back togeather.

a bit hard to use but has good quality

fraps is faster and easier but is not as smooth in the end and can cause a fps hit.

Fraps also costs money while recording a demo and converting is usually free.

Fraps is only 30sec long. But if u register u have to play and its as long as u want.

ya but any full resolution uncompressed vid will takes gigs of space

even if you go from source recorder to avi

but i do believe the source recorder can compress to mpeg4 or what ever codecs you have on your system.

also since the recorder renders 1 frames at a time you can max out the games settings even if your computer cant handle it and still get a perfect fps in the vid it will just takes longer to render. (prolly dosnt matter now but it was what i did when source first came out and i had a shitty graphics card for vids.)

Alright, ill try it out.

Thanks :D

you can convert .dem files straight into uncompressed avi files, but you'll have the same problem with it being a very large file as you do with Fraps and stuff like that. Plus the fact that it will literally take about an hour to do it for several minutes of footage if you are going for high quality. Fraps is a much easier and better option assuming your processor can handle it without too much of an FPS drop. If the file size is really that important to you (its not to me because I have over a terrabyte of space, yay external harddrives :D) then use a program like SUPER media converter (free) to convert them into an mpeg4 or something like that after you are done recording (will be MUCH smaller).

EDIT: The other thing, when using this method it is much better and easier to record a demo and then play it back only recording the interesting parts with fraps, instead of leaving fraps recording.
