more memory or less with faster speed

i have read articles saying using dual channel memory is better than using two different type of memory modules, because the slowest speed of memory is what is used. i currently have 2gb dual channel and still have a spare 1gb at slower speed. my question is should i use 3gb or just the 2gb?

if so, try the 3gb. If you see no difference, or it gets worse, go back to 2gb

ive never actually tried all 3gb because i read your memory is as fast as the slowest strip of memory.

Not only do you not want to use a single channel memory stick with dual channel but you also don't want to cross brands say you have some OCZ and corsair you don't want to put them together, even if they were both dual channel, there timings are way different and could cause system instability. Just go with your 2gb dual channel, if you need more figure out which type of dual channel you have and buy the SAME exact kind again.
