I7 rig for under 1000$

Wait what? Say that again? A 965 nearly as powerful as a 920? Not even close. We're talking 8 threads vs 4 threads, and triple channel DDR3 vs dual channel DDR3. The 965 will win in some applications at stock clocks simply because it is clocked higher, but lets face it, a blind monkey could overclock the 920 to 3.4 with the stock cooler. Clock for clock, the 920 blows the 965 out of the water, in EVERYTHING.

I would have to agree. The 965 is good, but nowhere near I7 good.
 
Agreed.....now that i have an i7 it makes it even more evident. The Phenom II X4 965 can hold its ground in gaming though and that's about it.........

Is anyone with i7 920/X58 experiencing slow bootup times with windows 7 compared to an older setup??? Mine has been loading up extremely slow ever since i upgraded. Like after that Welcome thing, i get a black screen with my mouse pointer and then it would take another like 20-25 secs till everything is loaded and i see my wallpaper etc....

I don't remember if this happened after i overclocked or right when i got it. I think it happened like right when i got it or about. That or it happened after i got a BSOD from oc'ing. But now my system is all stable and i still get this load boot up time from windows 7. Its definitely not normal.

Yeah mine is like that too. it takes like 20 seconds to get there with the mouse on the black screen. From the password screen windows loads in ~5-7 seconds.

Just set up a computer for my dad using an i7 920 with the eVGA SLI x58 LE board. Boots up within a few seconds.
 
Buy a X3440 Xeon. Google Canada Price and you can get a website that finds you the cheapest price, then take that price and pricematch with NCIX. You can get the Cpu for about $230, it's basically a i7 with the Xeon name.
eVGA P55 FTW $220
Coolermaster 690 II $99 - IMO better then the Haf at a lower price
750w Silverstone Strider Plus All Modular $130
$60 500GB HDD
$27 Optical drive
This is a starting point, just work from there and you can get a great system

yea there are a lot cheaper systems out there that will get you the same performance pretty much........a P55 system will be great for gaming and do just as well as the X58 but lack in terms of video production/editing etc...unless you get the i7 860 and up with hyper threading. Then you can expect similar performance.
 
thats why i said it depends what you're doing, because most rigs posted on here are for gaming aps, and an i7 over a 965/955 is NOT worth the added price, at all.
if you're using apps that will utilize the full power of the i7 sure go for it, but hell i don't even know what you'd be doing to use that kind of power.
besides everybody makes suggestions bias to what their own needs are, and mine are not even close to an i7 so i wouldn't suggest one unless you need it and probably the majority of people that spring for them don't need it, they just like to have the new and flashy...lets be honest.

This is what I was trying to get at. A spectacular gaming rig is not necessarily something that post the highest benchmark possible. An i7 processor is a great piece of hardware, but if all he's doing is gaming then does he really need it?

However, the OP did blatantly ask for it, so props to everyone that helped out with that.
 
Well a 965 is about $210 in Canada, the X3440 (i7 860) is about $230. So for $20 more you get something much faster in real world applications and he did ask for it. $20, in the long run isn't that much too when considering it's potential.
 
ya but a 955 is the exact same as a 965 just a lower base clock, and its 184.99 in canada (at least in my city)

Yup thats why an i5 750 is great for just gaming......you can overclock it to 4.0ghz+ and get performance equal to the i7's

If we're talking just plain gaming, then the Phenom II x4's definitely aren't a bad option and will save a lot of money down the road. I like X58 because of CFX/SLI, more versatile and 8 threads is just great to have and how multiple GPU's can run x16/x16 or better.
 
there ya go, there is almost always better options for price/performance ratio. regardless if its amd or intel or ati/nvidia i think price/performance is the best purchasing guide.

All together 909.94. Change a few things around could probably make it cheaper. I recommend getting a better PSU since that what will be powering everything. Especially if you plan to OC. I reccommend H50, Xigmatek Darkknight, Thermalright, Noctua. Whichever, they all have benefits.

I see 6 dim slots, this is the new "A" version so Gigabyte has changed a lot. SLI ready too :drool:

Im gonna wait a good like 5 months before making a decision and probably bringing a thread up about which GPU to get........TILL THEN!!
