Hey guys, I set up a Debian server yesterday and I got it all up and running. The only thing that I cant do is install anything. I've tried installing SourceMod, Mani Admin Mod, CSS:DM, etc to no avail. Any help will be appreciated

good lord you don't need to compile sourcemod to install it correctly. Just download it here: http://www.sourcemod.net/downloads.php

In particular, what problems are you having installing the addons? Browse to your CSS server dir e.g. /home/user/source_server/cs_directory

Put the sourcemod tarball into this folder with the mv command or wget to download it from a mirror if you're not using a GUI.

Unzip the tarball: "gunzip sourcemod-1-2.x.x."

Extract the tarball inside the CSS server directory. This will create the Addons folder with all the sourcemod data and configuration stuff.

tar -xvf sourcemod-1.2.x.x

It will be verbose so you can see what's running.

So that's sourcemod, but it has no basis to run on. You need Metamod:Source also. Download it from here: http://www.sourcemm.net/downloads/mmsource-1.8.0.tar.gz

Extract that the same as sourcemod. After that, create your VDF file so that the source engine knows where and how to load Metamod, which will in turn load Sourcemod. Create a VDF and follow the instructions here: http://www.sourcemm.net/vdf

Now that you have Sourcemod and Metamod:source installed, the server will start and in the console you can type the following command to verify they are both installed and running:

meta list. The output on my server looks like the following:

meta list
Listing 4 plugins:
[02] SourceMod (1.2.3) by AlliedModders LLC
[03] SDK Tools (1.2.3) by AlliedModders LLC
[04] BinTools (1.2.3) by AlliedModders LLC
[218] <NOFILE>

If you have any questions let me know. I run Ubuntu LAMP with a TF2, DoDS, and Goldeneye dedicated 24/7 servers on my home connection.

Additionally, start your server with the 'screen' command so you can send it to the background and be able to recall it easier. I use this command:

screen -A -m -d -S dods-server ./srcds_run -game dod -autoupdate +maxplayers 24 -console +map dod_contower -port 27015 +ip 192.168.1.21 -debug

And I can recall the server console by using: screen -x dods

When I am finished, while still in the console press Control + A + D and it will detach the screen so you can recall it later.

Don't forget to unlock the ports on your router and if you're using a linux firewall (chains, etc) add the exception there also for the INPUT and OUTPUT chains. God, does anybody use command line to edit their chains anymore?

Well, thanks for saying all that stuff guys! I was fiddling around and basically reinstalled everything. The problem turned out to be that I had the sourcemod.vdf in the wrong directory. Sorry for wasting your time :P

Thanks again!

EDIT: This is offtopic, but do you guys reccommend any SourceMod plugins that I should download?

I would also suggest installing sudo.

Code:
apt-get install sudo

Don't forget to modify your sudoers file. Found at /etc/sudoers

Maybe it will keep you from using the root account for your functions! (and add a bit of security ;) )
