New Card and Junk for Christmas

Hey guys I got a question.

Im running Vista Premium, with 1.6h processor, and the 7300gt videocard. My parents and grandparents are givin me $500 bucks for christmas and was hoping to get some advice from you guys. I'm in dire need of a new processor/videocard setup because the one I have now, is not good enough for highest settings on dods or any other game, but is good enought for mid to very high. So i was wondering if this is a good buy.


EVGA GeForce 8800GTS 320MB Superclocked PCI Express x16 Video Card, and Intel Pentium 4 524 3.06GHz Socket 775 Processor ( 533MHz FSB 1MB L2 Cache ). it all adds up to about 450 dollars.
Good or no..?

8800 + Quad: $560

But that is only if your motherboard supports those cpu's.
 
my mother board has the socket 755, so I picked a processor that matched the socket number so i was sure it would fit

Manufacturer: Asus

Kovalinsk, understand that Intel has been using the socket 755 for a long time, and over many processor generations. That one socket covers many processors and just because the processor and motherboard are the same socket DOES NOT mean that they are compatible. (That would make too much sence - hey its not AMD after all)

Once selecting a processor / motherboard with the same socket, you also have to match up FSB, which on the 755 pin motherboards ranges from 533MHz to 1066MHz. If your motherboard runs at , say, 800MHz then a new processor at 1066MHz will not run correctly. keep in mind that FSB also affect your RAM too.

I am slightly confeused by your las post, you say you have an asus motherboard - but also an HP motherboard, but also a "IPILP-LC" motherboard,.... neither of those numbers exist - according to asus.com so therefore I dont know what speed your board is running at. I would be interested to know more about this "asus HP motherboard" as traditionally manufacturers like HP do not use high end gaming motherboards like asus. But even if they did, the word asus usually wouldnt appear anyplace on it.


As far as your initial post,... I am wondering if your motherboard supports PCIx or AGP. That aside, I own an 8800gts and I really like mine. However, you will find that an 8800gt will be cheaper and nearly as good. It seems to me that if you are going to get a gts you might as well as get the 640MB version ot just get the GT.

Please give us the rest of your computer specs too.
 
my motherboard's processor bus runs at 800mhz and so does the processor i wish to get, and i'll post the link for my specs.

I bought this comp recently and right out the bat i got the 7300gt to hold me off till christmas. This link should.... have everything you need.

well it looks like they do use asus, im surprised
the CPU youre looking is good but the FSB is slower than your old one, so see if theres anything with a 800mhz FSB, im not good with intel... im an AMD (ftw) guy <- theyre easier to shop for

trying to upconvert a brand name computer into a gamming computer is like converting a huffy into an aston martin. It's possible - i guess -

Here is what I think, all you can do is work with the dammage already caused so i'm gogn to try to stay posative. The card you are looking at is ok, btu I think you should get onto whatever waiting list you need to to get a 8800gt, save some bucks. because if you get a gts i feel liek you should get 640mb.

for the processor, sure that looks good, i mean, it is only a single core but its better than what you have and probably is approaching the best the motherboard will take?

whatever you do dont get vista with that machine. The max ammount of RAM the mobo supports is 2GB. keeping in mind that 2GB is absolutely required to play games in vista. I say required, but only in the way that clothes are required when outside in the wintertime in new england - you dont HAVE to do anything) Also, pc2 5300 isnt the fastest RAM in the world and ther eis no way hp put ultra low latency ram in a computer that came with onboard video only. So that just means that when you put your other stick of RAM in, its not gong to be slow, but not as fast as it could be, your limmited on capacity and i will be honest when i say that i dont know anything about intell chipsets and its almost 7AM and i am havnt gone to bed and will not be gong to bed so i just dont feel like searching it out.

all in all i think a 8800gt, but eitherway will be about the same performance wise anyhow.
 
I already have this comp... lol it has vista on it no changin that the specs on the page are what i have except for the videocard. Right now im running the 7300gt on medium/high settings. I only have one gig of ram but it seems to perform 'Alright' but not great. so your sayin get the 8800gt..? gotcha
 
if you can go dual or quad core with that socket, go for it. im hesitant on a recommendation cause i can't recall the latest intel socket that supports a Q6600 but if i had one that did, that would be where i'd start at, take the rest and date some chicks.... back to the subject, if you still need a vid card, the latest nvidia, i think its the GT 92? gives 99% the performance at almost 1/2 < the price of a GTX super duper card...? if that doesn't work, get a job
 
are you willing to oc your processor... if so 6750 can be ocd to great potentials. the Q6600 has sparatic performance because not everything is ready for quad.... check out tom's hardware cpu charts
