Probably the easiest way to get Ubuntu, is Wubi. Wubi is downloaded onto windows and sets up ubuntu, making the installation simple. It does not need partitioning, and asks no questions, making ubuntu easy to install.

Once it is installed, if you experience problems or dont like it, you can just un-install it inside windows, like any other program.

Now, the steps:

1. Download Wubi from: http://wubi-installer.org

2. Download Ubuntu's iso file (desktop only i think i could be wrong. http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/download

3. PUT THE .ISO IN THE SAME FOLDER AS THE WUBI FILE YOU DOWNLOADED. Just put it on your desktop really. You do NOT need to burn it to CD for this.

4. Disconnect all internet, wireless and wired. This is because it will download the .iso file for you but you already have. Downloading beforehand is faster.

5. Run Wubi, select your options. Like so:
PLEASE NOTE: Ubuntu requires a minimum of 5gb, so give it a good 7-8gb of space.

6. Reboot when its done.

7. As the computer turns on, you will be asked whether to boot in windows, or Ubuntu. Press Ubuntu

8. Now sit back and grab some popcorn, while the installer does all the work for you!

9. When this part of the installation is done, the computer will reboot again.

10. MAKE SURE AFTER YOU HAVE DONE THE 2ND PART OF THE UBUNTU INSTALL, AND ARE REBOOTING FOR THE SECOND TIME, PRESS WINDOWS!!!!

11. Just boot up windows once, then shut it down, and then boot into your now painlessly installed Ubuntu.

Now i caution one thing:

Dont do a hard-reboot, meaning, do not press the power butting to reboot, shut down normally. This will cause you to have some disk errors, and potentially, not be able to run Ubuntu.

Hope this helps a lot of people i've never done a tut like this

Oh and welcome to your new Ubuntu

Nice tutorial, pictures and everything. I don't think anyone will get stuck downloading it now ! :)

~~Torag.

Good job :) Will help the newbs who want to try Linux but don't know about partitioning.

Good work.

Very nice tutorial thanks man :) I love when people contribute to this section <3

I love you now mega rep+!

Nice :) good job on this
Thank a ton, gonna install it shortly.
Edit: It worked!

really it is not any harder to install with the live cd

This is convenient since it allows people to TRY ubuntu, that way they can decide if they want to run a live CD to install it on a second partition or whatever they wish to do.

Ive never used Ubuntu so i might download this to see how it is. What is it usually used for? And what are the advantages over using Windows?

The basis of linux is, that its free and open source. Ubuntu itself has a large community that provides a huge number of packages, programs, and support available for it.

Try it out for yourself, thats the point of Wubi

the advantages:
starts up so much faster
has cool desktop effects
lots of custom programs
runs faster
most drivers work without driver downloads (like network card :D)

disadvantages:
ipod use it kinda confusing.
cant really game as well ( you can but its slow)

well thats all i can think about now.
im running ubuntu and i love it 100x more than windows.
i can deal with playing NOT alot of games but i got steam and ins (aswell as CSS so thats all i need)

go ubuntu!

I love Ubuntu... one of the advantages of using Wubi over the live boot (Which I use Unetbootin to do, which most people probably do as well) is that if you do decide to uninstall it, it is not that big of an issue.

Every time I've deleted Ubuntu partion, or any Linux OS, I have to boot with my windows cd. Then I have to go into recovery mode, and run fix MBR, since it was taken out of the MBR and screws up windows booting.

:)

Even now with people saying we can't game on Linux, it's being done. WINE, vmware, are all making us able to do it

even running virtualbox with a virtual windows xp is fine

i never said you cant game because there is VM's and wine

but wine is far from perfect and it never will be perfect so a lot of games are buggy on it and VM's cuase huge performance hits

Very true. WINE is nowhere near perfection in any way.

VM's do cause huge performance issues, but can be OK if you have a decent amount of RAM, and you run a low end system like XP.

ya i have a fairly good gpu so it would be a wast to play games via wine or a vm

but i do have terabytes of space so i usually have a few operating systems on the go
got openSuSE 11.2 running as my main os than an other SuSE 11.2 with unstable stuff that im testing, got a win7 boot for games and a OS X 10.6 boot for work. then on top of that i got about 20vm's with different os's
