Im thinking of building a cheap pc, under $500. Can anyone help me find decent parts from newegg.com that i can use? I only want like 1GB RAM, intel dual core maybe, nothing big.

And a cheap graphics card, maybe 512mb RAM? Nvidia.

I already have a DVD drive at home here, a few spare cords and such, and i can even knockoff buying casing if i can find a motherboard fitting my case.

Can anyone help?

Whoa man,
doesn't matter what you want to do with it,
you should get at least 2GB ram.
And getting an Intel dual core right now is not a good investment for that budget,
Because Socket 775 is dead, and the i3 starts at $124.

Well this isn't really for gaming or anything big. Just for Linux and to learn some overclocking.

2GB would be nice I suppose though.
But what can I use that'll be within that price range? I don't wanna spend much on something I'm just messing around with

i recommended this to someone else with a tight budget.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/ComboBundleDetails.aspx?ItemList=Combo.328144

and this PSU

and this GPU

This puts the total a little over $500.......but trust me, this will game beastly. The CPU/Mobo etc.. aren't that good. But FPS is mainly based on GPU anyways so that 5850 will do you good.

The CPU may bottleneck the GPU but i doubt it, its only a single chip card. It will definitely be bottlenecked if you crossfire but that board only has 1xPCI-e 2.0 x16 slot anyway.

This is the way to go for a budget gaming system.

plus, you can OC that chip to 3.7 easy

I'll check that out. If you can go even cheaper it would work, since I only need enough to run CSS with no lagg (so even a 512mb graphics card would work fine)

my friend reccomended an AMD athlon 250 dual core @ 3.0ghz 2mb cache for a processor

The pc will mainly be used for:

-Running Linux on a second partition, just because I like Linux ;)
-Windows xp on the other partition
-CSS, but not very often
-Learning to build a pc
-Learning about how a pc works inside
-Possibly a little oc'ing

Okay, I'll throw something together.

Define ATX?

lol..........google it, its just a standard in the PC world. Its like the size of the motherboard and basically all cases these days support it. The only reason he asks is because if your case doesn't have the holes to screw the motherboard in, then well, it won't fit.

If you want cheaper. Do the combo rig i posted, and buy an ATI 5770 1gb instead. Save like $150 dollars putting your system at around $400 flat or even in the $300's.

It's perfect for someone like you wanting to test OC, only play CS:S, learning about computer, etc.. Don't go too expensive basically. The 5770 will do you fine, performs a bit less than a 4890 but can OC like a champ teaching you even more :)

A little over $500, but it's pretty good

I like most of that, especially $55 for a 500gb hard drive @ 7200rpm

do you think we could downgrade slightly to a different graphics card? Like I said, I only need CSS to work, and that can run fine on 256mb integrated graphics usually.

Can we also drop to 1 stick of 2GB RAM or 2x1gb? Just to save cash

Even a slightly lower processor would be good, just saving money.

Although, this would make a nice gaming rig it appears.

Okay, I'll do that now.
