Google Fiber for Communities : Think big with a gig

As some of you may not know, (probably most of you since this was just announced by Google), Google is planning to creat a new Internet service via Fiber Optics to communities.

**Taken from the projects home page**

Google is planning to launch an experiment that we hope will make Internet access better and faster for everyone. We plan to test ultra-high speed broadband networks in one or more trial locations across the country. Our networks will deliver Internet speeds more than 100 times faster than what most Americans have access to today,
over 1 gigabit per second :scared:,
fiber-to-the-home connections. We'll offer service at a competitive price to at least 50,000 and potentially up to 500,000 people.

From now until March 26th, we're asking interested municipalities to provide us with information about their communities through a Request for information (RFI), which we'll use to determine where to build our network.

Like our WiFi network in Mountain View, the purpose of this project is to experiment and learn. Network providers are making real progress to expand and improve high-speed Internet access, but there's still more to be done. We don't think we have all the answers ? but through our trial, we hope to make a meaningful contribution to the shared goal of delivering faster and better Internet for everyone.

For those of you who don't understand or dont see a big deal about it
First It,s about 100 times FASTER(based on an average) than what you have currently. Even though its 1 gigabit per second of speed, you must follow the rule of Isp speeds, Always divide the advertised speed(aka 50mb/s) by 8 to get your actuall speed, though 1 gb/s would average to around 125 megabytes per second. To put 125mb/s in perspective, you could download an entire 50gb Blu-ray disk(providing the host/hosts support 125mb/s for a single connection) in about 6.6 Minutes at average(400 seconds).

Ok after reading that today in school with my friends, and us virtually becoming speechless for the first time, we decided to support the project and to nominate our local area/community for the trial.

Enough said, read all about it here(also has a youtube video to watch on that page) http://www.google.com/appserve/fiberrfi
and http://www.google.com/appserve/fiberrfi/public/overview

Then once you have decided to become part of the future of the internet,
nominate your area here(fill out what you can and as much as you can)
http://www.google.com/appserve/fiberrfi/public/options

Reactions, and succesfull nominations are welcome in your replies.
Have fun!!

Same here post its, best I have is cable internet via Comcast

P.S. to all (Off topic)
Just so there is no confusion, I am [TT] RedM00N
Apparently I logged into the wrong account on the
forums without realizing it until I posted this topic.
Just saying so that this post doesnt get deleted
for any reason I can't think of.

Yeah I am waiting for Comcast to jump on the bandwagon and start doing some fiber here

I wonder how much google will make off all the information that it will get off it's user's surfing habits to other companies... they do that with other stuff.

here is something more like it:

Once this becomes the norm, imagine how much more business steam is going to get. ATM games are 15gigs ~20gigs at the max, you could just dl all your games off steam in like 20 seconds.

yeah steam will be apart of every game if not they will fail but i really hope they pick my town Peoria is know for being testers for everything since like 1910 we have a saying "if it plays in Peoria" meaning back when theaters showed plays they came here first if they where successful they went to New York if they where so so they went to Chicago Peoria is what made Chicago big

AH! I just nominated my city... I think we have a good chance though. I live in Raleigh which is in the Research Triangle Park that has like CISCO and a few other large companies, and there's the Triangle Game Initiative here too that has like EPIC games and the Escapist Magazine and a couple other major game industries.

*crosses fingers*

Comcast + T1 connection + not paying for it = Loving it.
