I need some assistance with my internet connection. my server is 10mbps service which i am running directly to my computer, there are no routers involved however something is sucking up my internet usage and i can't find out what it is.
I've run multiple programs for malware/spyware with no results, nothing is found, as well as virus scans. This has only started happening once i made my upgrade to windows 7 so im really trying to figure this out.
Nothing is really listed on my startup config that i don't want there etc, but i do run between 40-45 processes and lately my firefox has been running slow, as well as getting really bad ping spikes in CSS. Jumping from 50 ping/latency up to 250 every minute or two.
Im not real familiar with networking troubleshooting or windows 7 so if anybody could assist me it would be great. Possibly if i could find a list somewhere of every program or process that is using the internet connection i could deduce it from there.

Are you running multiple applications at once that require Internet? Or are you possibly over your bandwith limit and your ISP has capped you?

Actually if your ISP says your getting 10Mbps your not exactly getting 10Mbps. I would assume your on a DSL connection and your speed is based on how close you are to the junction box. Alot of things can play on DL/UP speeds. Downed switches, hubs, routers, servers(DHCP,DNS,etc) from the ISP. Noice/static/basic general interference on the lines.(fiber and copper)

If your getting the bad lag for a few minutes and then goes away I wouldn't really worry about it. If your getting it for long periods of time or complete loss of connections then its time to talk to the ISP on what is going on. I highly recommend a router between you and your ISP's modem for privacy reasons.

ok you don't understand. yes i know im not getting exactly 10mbps, i actually get like 9.5 on speedtest.net but it has nothing to do with my ISP at all, it has to do with my computer settings or windows settings or whatever. and no i am not running any other internet using applications, but i know there are some in the background but i don't know which ones are which.

and yes it is something to worry about because it hasn't happened before, and while it happens CSS is unplayable....and btw its cable internet. no bandwidth is not capped, especially not only mid month etc whatever, its my computer thats why i asked if anybody knew a way i could find out which processes are accessing my network.

ok NVM i guess i think i found it myself. in case anybody else needs to know go to task manager, services then click services and sort them by log on as and scroll to see all of the network services and see which ones are active. you can also change settings for each service for automatic, manual, start, stop etc.
this seems to be the only place that fully lists all of the services or processes that have access to my network, so i'll just close out the ones that are not necessary (with use of some google searches) and see if that solves my problem permanently
