Well, I was thinking about upgrading my graphics card today, my old Sapphire HD 4870 is getting kinda outdated. Yes it's the 1 GB version. So I was looking around for new cards and then my friend called me up and told me that he had just sucessfully SLI'd?...2 Nvidia 8800's and an Nvidia 8600. Now that got me thinking.

Can I Crossfire my 4870 with a 5870 or a even a 5970?....Or anycard thats in the 5800 or 5900 series?

From what I hear, no you can't :(

And he probably means the 8600 is used as a dedicated Physx card, but it shows that it's SLI.

Thats EXACTLY WHAT HE SAID!....But whats that mean....(lol, I'm not too up to date with this stuff)

Ok, you can only crossfire 2 ATI card that are in the same family. So you can cross fire a 4870 and a 4850 but the 4870 will only run at the same speed as the 4850. You can't crossfire to different series of cards IE, 5870 and 4870 won't work.

Hope that helped.

Cross fire is still new to me i dont understand it all that well sorry :/

Both Cross Fire for ATI and SLI for NVIDIA both basically mean that you make two individual graphic cards work together for better results. If they're both identical then you'll be getting nearly twice the performance.

The cards have to be in the same family though. For ATI that means all the cards with the same first two #'s in the HD ones have Cross Fire ability. NVIDIA has similar with their cards. I think they go by their series only, but I think not all cards in the same series can be... I dont know. The NVIDIA sites are pretty bad to browse IMO. xD

No you can't crossfire a 4870 with the new 58xx series. They are different architectures etc...You can crossfire a 4870 with a 4850,4870,4850x2,4870x2.

Money could be an issue. :P

Plus Cross Firing two inferior GPU's might get you better results than having just one better one. And most likely get the two cheaper as well.

What games are you having problems with, because you could just get another 4870 for less cash than a 58xx
