To anyone who bought AvP: It any good?

Yeah it is a pretty good game, it is worth a rental at least, the single player campaigns don't last very long, about the same as most single player fps games these days though. Graphics are great if you can crank them up, pretty impressive looking game. Multiplayer is the real draw and once they set up the dedicated servers I look forward to playing it quite a bit. All the sides seem pretty balanced. Overall a great game. Should keep you entertained.

You should see the graphics in dx11, they are so amazing. There is tesselation everywhere. Plus this game runs great all maxed dx11 features 150-200fps they really put time into the pc version.

Only thing I dont like about the game is the auto aim on the melee, feels cheap.

i really like it so far, even with matching in atm, its not laggy, so when dedicated are finally released, its gunna be ace.

There was alot of negative feed back from the demo but, i see alot of other forums people are coming out loving the game i have been trying to play i beat the alien campaign and am almost done with marine then i'll go beat the pred campaign should be interesting. Its awesome how they intermingled the stories

I got it and love the game play but the one complaint I Have is the language is very strong in the game. I found the language a bit over the top while playing have actually turned off speech when playing the predator. Then again I am basing this on about maybe 2 hours of play (finished 2 camaigns as the predator 1 as the marine).

I spoke with one of my friends yesterday about this game. He is usually pretty accurate with his reviews of games, and according to him, it is a great game, but shouldn't be looked at as a normal FPS. It needs to be viewed as a run and gun style game. I'm downloading it now, because honestly, that sounds refreshing. I'll post my thoughts on it in a few hours. Until then... probably TF2.

I would try the demo, if you like the look/mechanics, then you'll probably like the game. Other than that, well you'll just have to take the chance on it, or wait until the price drops in about 2 weeks.

This game is far from run and gun :) its more like you have to take your time and look behind you.

I have it and i've been really enjoying it, it's very intense and exciting. While it lacks a huge amount of content in single player, I still think it's great and the online play is fun too.

PS. PM ME AND/OR ADD ME IF YOU HAVE IT :] Steam account dead_1ee

Too many people base whether a game is good off someone else's OPINION! Ya that's all a review is...an opinion. I don't even trust most reviews, if i want to see if a game is good before I buy it, I'll find a demo or watch someone play it. Most reviewers look at the wrong aspects such as.."are the graphics up to date, etc."

I'm going to have to say my biggest disapointment with the game is that the individual scenarios are rather short, and that they seem rather clastrophobic in what actually happens in it, i.e. rather limited.

Let me review Bioshock 2 first then I'll tackle this one.

I gave it a rent. Here are my thoughts:

Marine Campaign = Crap
Predator Campaign = Crap
Alien Campaign = Crap

Multiplayer = Okay.

I will admit, the biggest reason for playing AvP has always been the multiplayer (Especially AvP 2 and its evolution mode, my all time favourite) but I still was hoping for decent campaigns. AvP 1 had good campaigns, and AvP 2 had EXCELLENT campaigns. The ones in the new game are terribly designed and just boring. But the multiplayer is okay to fallback on.

I will admit, I don't think the MP is as good as past entries (In fact I've been enjoying the re-release of #1 on Steam A LOT, I'm amazed its held up as well, even if its still got lag issues and they reduced the player amount.) since its more limited and has less game modes, Evolution was a monolith game mode so I didn't expect it to be in a Rebellion game, but I would've at least expected Last Man Standing or Alien/Predator tag. Regardless, Species deathmatch is still a joy (And so is regular deathmatch) and the survival mode is still fun too.

Oddly enough, I don't get why everyone says the Alien controls are so awful, I'll admit the Predator controls are bad (More on that in a bit) because the controls feel tighter to me than they did in the old games. Mostly because you don't move as fast (And likewise, I don't get why they say the Alien is too fast. I imagine the people who say Alien is too fast in the new game would probably throw up of motion sickness if they played the old games as a Xenomorph) and you don't have to hold the crawl button the whole damn time, which allows you to focus more on whats below you and crawling slowly. The only MAJOUR quirks I have with Xenomorph controls is the fact it automatically crawls down walls when attempting to get on a set of stairs or a slope, and leaping from walls is a majour bitch to pull off.

I will say that I preferred having the ability to headbite in real time (Though since you rarely stand up, it'd be hard to line that up) as well as charging my tail to impale (Hey, that rhymed!) but stealth kills are still fun and when they say this game is grisly, they bloody mean it. Even I was shocked the first time I used my Xenomorph tail to cut someones neck and then slowly pulling it away, revealing sinew and bleeding tubes. In fact, I was pretty offended several times, not because of the grisly animations, but that I got in trouble for yelling "Holy HELL!" on the mic when players had their little kids watching them play. Wait, WHAT!?!? You'll let your 4 year old watch a Predator pull someones spine out, but a very minor curse like "Hell" is going to traumatize them for life? And I'm serious, I've run into 35 players that had little kids watching them play but whined if anyone said so much as "Crap." Parenting!

Anyway, back on topic. The xenomorph has and always will be my favourite species to play as, and maybe its just my practice with the old school editions, its the only species I'm good at. In fact I loved the sheer ANGERRRR of one man who I was persecuting (Dominating, essentially) who found a flamethrower, and was all gung-ho because he actually watched the damn movie(s) and remembers that the flamethrower is the best weapon against Xenomorphs and was burning my team mate, and I saw him and ran off and then clung to a ceiling, and he never bothered to look up and I dropped down after he passed and impaled him.

The predator is disappointing. The controls in the old games were perfect for Predator, you could zoom in and swap weapons on the fly while moving fast. The predator now moves really slow and doesn't have a run function like the other two species, and using weapons is a majour pain as you always have your claws out and must press a specially assigned button to use your weapon. Aiming is also harder as he turns the slowest and only two weapons use the triangulation reticle, and finally zooming in is slow as well. You also can't run and jump, you have to press a special button and then aim for a spot to jump somewhere. That sucks.

Marine handles fine, but its harder to mess up running and gunning controls. I will say, its incredible that the marine is actually fairly sturdy this time around, in MP it actually feels more balanced, even if some people seem to think the marine weaponry is "Overpowered," but I don't feel its overpowered.

So yeah, those are my thoughts. MP is okay. I'm not going to buy it until its a bit cheaper, and even then I'll only buy it on the presumption people are still playing it online. Otherwise its fairly "Meh."

I havent played this new one yet, but I know AVP2(2001) for PC was incredible. The multiplayer was anyway. I agree with all of these people saying to not base your views on opinions. I know I've bought games that had like 20/100, 1-2/5, etc etc and I have absolutely loved the game. I've also played 5/5 and 100/100 etc and absolutely hated the game. It all depends what you're into and what kind of games you like to play ^.^

Why is everyone attacking me saying I need to not base my opinion on the critics opinion? The whole reason I created this thread was to hear more testimonials from actual gamers, and when it comes to critics, I never base my opinions on their reviews; but I read reviews to get a better idea of what to expect from a movie & game and whether or not its gunna be my sort of game. I reserved my thoughts on the game until I actually played it, then I rented the game and posted my opinion: the multiplayer is good but not worth shelling out 60 bucks; but it might be worth it when its lower (Like 20-30 dollars) and I didn't think the Alien controls are THAT bad.

I'm a critic myself, I often post reviews and am very opinionated, but when I write a review I'm not trying to say "Look, this is our opinion and its now YOUR opinion" and I know other critics aren't. I don't get it, if I agree slightly with a critic, I get attacked for not using my real opinion. That is BS. If I disagree slightly with a critic, I get attacked because my opinion is "Wrong." I got that in my rather negative Fallout 3 review, and at least 3 people said I was "wrong" because the critics said it was good. I wasn't there to say "Don't play Fallout 3," I was there to share my opinion and give an idea of what the game was like, and of course what I liked and disliked.

I also got crap for my Prince of Persia review for being negative as well, and arguably the most ridiculous assault for not giving a proper rating was when I reviewed Chinatown wars. I gave the game an 8.4, which is NOT a bad score but some posters and even PMers said that I was grossly underrating it and that I should've given it an above 9 rating because "That's what the critics said."

Don't give ratings.
A real critic is able to let his own opinion shine through slightly and give the readers a simple yay or nay without a numeric score. Scores are ass.

Also, Predator. <3
HA!

Apologies, but I like to break down each aspect of the game and I do give a "Yay or Nay" with the score as well, but the thing is if I didn't break it down my reviews would be disorganized. Focusing on each aspect one at a time allows me to be more thorough and its not a review if you just say "THIS GAME SUCKS" or "THIS GAME RULES" without giving the pros and cons. That's a simple opinion, not a criticism. If you were a critic, you'd probably know how a score, be it numerical or some other system actually helps when writing a text review. I can see nixing scores in a video review, but that's because you can actually demonstrate what you did and didn't like.

Plus 99% of the time people don't whine about my scores unless its a REALLY popular game and I'm not goosestepping by agreeing with every other critic blindly and actually stating my opinion. You singled out my Chinatown wars score, and why was 84% and me saying "A very fun DS game" in the review a "bad" opinion just because I didn't give it a perfect score like everyone else?

Whatever, this doesn't need to turn into a flamewar.

As far as the Predator goes, I <3 the Predator too, but I think his controls in this version are the weakest which makes him my least favourite, not saying I didn't have fun taking trophies or doing that rather painful looking Alien kill where he uses the Aliens second mouth to take them down. Speaking of Trophies, we have a rank system now, they SERIOUSLY need to add in Trophy bounties. They have the whole "Persecutor" thing, but seriously persistent Predator players need to get bonuses for getting trophies on the hardest to kill player and their "Persecutors," even if we'd need special rewards for the other classes too to keep it balanced.

I'm not trying to turn this into a flamewar, I was just replying with my own opinion, and that is that you can be a critic and write reviews about games without representing your own opinion on the game, sorry, your unbiased opinion on the game without a numerical score.

It's a challenge for the game reviewer (critic if you wish) to do so.
There is no mathematical meter for telling how good something - especially a game - is, even though many people go far and wide in search of something so mythical. If a reviewer just settles for voicing his own opinion in a review it does no one any good and entertains only those who just like to read written text. The real truth is found when you do two things at once.

If you, as a critic can tell the readers your own opinion on the game / anything AND at the same time put that in proportion with the gamers' consensus on what kind of qualities make a good game, the end result is an equally entertaining and at the same time a truly useful, successful review.

Without a score.

The more i play the new AvP the more i hate it anymore. After the excitement comes pity and a poor taste in my mouth wish i would of bought BF:BC2

Sad thing is the game has already died. The servers are up and most of them are empty time will tell if it will even last.

The game has flopped

ouch, I guess I won't get it then. Maybe get it just for the single player, I like single player stuffs.

guys, you cant really judge a game until you have played it. the reviewers arent you. sometimes they can be off, and you play a game you like but they dont. its kind of 50/50 when reviewers tell you about games that are like below the 60% tile.

but one game comes to mind when i think about bad games. turning point, good god that was horrific.

anyway, i been hearing good things about AVP from friends. me personally, wont get the game. but me and my friends havent lied about games yet :3

i think this is a must try for people who dont know what they want from games XD

That's why chosing to not release a demo IS stupid.
