Maybe it is just me but the last time i would ever want to do a system restore is after having a virus. Why would i want to restore the virus too?
Twikster, here is what you need to do.
open up the device manager (right click my computer > properties > hardware > device manager) then look down the list and find CD drives. click the plus sign next to it and you will see how ever many drives you have. Then, click each one and delete them. Restart your computer.
CD drives are plug an play and windows xp will automatically reinstall the good drivers for them. Once it does that, the drives will read CD's and you can put the driver disk / software disk for your burner or DVD drive and reinstall them.
after restart, if the device manager shows errors or yellow explimation points next to them then its probably not the driver but a problem with the drive or something else. let us know.
