STALKER: Call of Pripyat won't start

Hi, I'm having an issue. I can't get Call of Pripyat to start, I have the Steam version. It gives me this error:

"Warning: Your video card does not meet game requirements
Please try and lower settings"

But I can't lower settings cause I can't get into the freakin' menu.

The second issue, my card does meet its requirements! I read the Steam requirements multiple times, and it does! In fact it exceeds them. I can also play Shadow of Chernobyl and Clear Sky fine.

There are the requirements listed on Steam

OS: Windows XP, SP2
Processor: 2.2 GHz Intel Pentium 4/ 2.2. GHz AMD Athlon XP 2200+
Memory: 768 MB RAM
Graphics: nVidia GeForce 5900 128MB / AMD Radeon 9600 XT 128 MB
DirectX?: DirectX 9 compatible
Hard Drive: 6 GB of free space
Sound: DirectX 9 compatible

Here are my system specs

OS: Windows XP SP3
Processor: 3.2 GHz Intel Pentium 4 HT
Memory: 3 gb ram
Graphics: ATI (AMD) Radeon x1650 512 mb
Sound: Sound Blaster Audigy 2 value

I've upgraded my video card... When I did run first time set up, I cancelled DirectX instillation, but thats because whenever Steam installs DirectX it never ever installs and eventually after 12 hours it crashes if I don't cancel it, but unless a new DX package was released in the last month and a half, I am up to date, and my video card is up to date as well.

Your graphics card seems pretty old.... I'm not too familiar with the X1xx series But I think you should upgrade.

You could try this:

Right click on the game in your My Games list >> Properties >> General >> Set Launch Options

Once there add -autoconfig and press OK, then try the game.

X1650 series ran from 2007-2009. It doesn't make sense that this card cannot meet the requirements, because the engine is the same as the first two games and I can run them perfectly, plus it supports a 128 mb Radeon 9600 xt, a model released in 2003. Heck, when I bought this computer, it had a 128 mb Radeon 9800 xt, which was newer (2004) so my current card is MUCH newer than the one the game can support at minimum, and much more pwerful. Also, I can't upgrade. For one, only 500 dollars in the bank. Secondly, my computer is using an AGP motherboard. No PCI-e. I most likely can't buy a new computer for another 1-4 years.

You could try this:

Right click on the game in your My Games list >> Properties >> General >> Set Launch Options

Once there add -autoconfig and press OK, then try the game.

This did nothing. Now I don't even get the splash page.

Well -autoconfig should have restored the video settings to the default settings.

In the same place you could try -dxlevel 90, that would force it to use DirectX 9.0. Or maybe -windowed, which would force it to run in a window.

Without being able to get into the game it sure makes lowering settings tricky...

ok i know that the game says those minimum requirements, but TBH that just seems EXTREMELY low for a game of this caliber. STALKER is a game that is known for being a huge huge resource hog even with rigs higher than the recommended.
i really have no idea how to help you start it up on this game, but even though it may not run good at all it should at least start.
this is why buying games off steam is in my opinion, highly not recommended

I ran a benchmark tool from the developers with the game set to minimum... it says it can run the game at 104 fps!!!! That means my computer CAN run the friggen thing! Also to JunK, that still doesn't make sense because I can run both the first two on medium with a high framerate; plus if you remember, the xRayEngine was made in 2001 and was meant to be the first DX9 game, it arrived rather late and is considered fairly out of date, and was compatible with low end systems. Also I've been buying from Steam since 2004 and never had any problems >_>

Metro, adding any command lines just makes the game not even start. Unless I have to modify the .exe directly instead of doing it through steam.

Your pc is soo much better than mine and my pc runs it great which is confusing but idk...I asked a friend and he said something about xfire and fraps making the game crash...No clue if you had those running but he told me to tell ya sorry i cant offer anymore help ..

Does the benchmark tool have sound?

Thinking about sound may be getting off topic as the warning specifically says your video settings, but it might be worth a shot...

Did you cancel the DirectX install or just tell it not to start? If you canceled it it might be messing you up.

Have you tried reinstalling the game?

I'm running Windows XP, can't use Direct X 11. I downloaded the latest DX End User runtime from Windows. Also, I cancelled the DirectX install. As I said, Steam never finishes those installs for some reason. :S The benchmark tool didn't have any sound, and my sound drivers are up to date.

Make sure to run Steam itself, the steam.exe as administrator. I had this issue with Double Agent on Windows 7.

I'm the only user and am an admin, but I don't see any button anywhere that asks to "Run as administrator." :S Also, you know I'm using XP, not 7 or vista, right?

But would a cracked EXE possibly work? When I bought BioShock from Steam, I had a similar issue (Something to do with the DRM) but a cracked EXE fixed it.

Sorry for posting twice in a row guys, but I just got it working! Go to your main stalker directory (C:/program files/Steam/Steamapps/common/stalker call of pripyat/ and delete the "user.ltx" file. I don't know what it does, but it solved my problem which was exactly the same as yours.

As long as you legally own the game you may acquire either a digital copy or a physical copy, under current piracy laws.

Just be careful because if you run STEAM at the same time you're using a "cracked" or otherwise signed digitally EXE file, STEAM may claim you of piracy and ban you. You may have to turn off STEAM as you play this game, but I am not sure.
