Screen Garbling :(

Occasionally, without warning or anything at all seeming to cause it, my screen will garble and my computer will shut down.

I have read a few forums where people were having the same problem, but their solutions didn't fix mine... and theirs always seemed to happen when they were doing something specific like downloading or surfing the web or whatever. Mine just does it whenever it pleases.

It isn't overheating, and I have all my drivers updated. As soon as I get my battery in for my other laptop, I'm going to take it in and get it looked at (it's under warranty) but didn't know if anyone had any suggestions to what it may be?

It's really annoying.

Virus? maybe, best thing is to take it to get it looked it maybe something more serious..

2 of the 3 scenarios I can think of you mentioned, so the third would be the graphics card/processor is going..

Just to be sure you have the latest video drivers go to the manufacturers website and download the latest drivers for your card from there.

Well I'm not usually doing anything that would cause it to overheat (like playing a game or anything... it happens any time at all) and it never feels hot, not even warm half the time... and it does get hot occasionally so I know I can feel it. Sometimes I can force it to happen by clicking a lot... like how in the olden days of dial up if you just clicked around a lot the whole computer would freeze, but most of the time it just randomly garbles and shuts off.

Download a GPU temperature monitor, if you watch it a bit and its going higher and higher until it 'garbles'. I'd suggest GPU-Z shows the temp, load and fan speed, which should help show where the problem occurs.

need to find a way of monitoring the card... like the utility it came with perhaps... nvidia and ati both have monitors... just b/c it doesnt FEEL hot doesnt mean it isnt... If your fan isnt doing its job.. or the grease wasnt on right to begin with it can still overheat w/o you even knowing it... had this issue with a 9600gt... factory grease had a bubble in it... insta-overheat

Also.. is it bluescreening?.. at all? if so jot down the message in the top 1/4 of the screen.. that can really tell us alot... Memory issues sometimes cause these kinds of crashes as well.

Any hardware updates to ur comp?.. software updates?.. Dig deep, and spill it :P

It isn't bluescreening at all :( just garbles...

And sometimes this happens almost as soon as I turn it on... can it overheat that quickly?

I did all the hardware updates, etc, when I upgraded to Windows 7 so all of that should be fine... as that was the first thing I did. I think I'm probably going to just take it in... maybe I can get some free stuff out of it...

Would something wrong with the battery possibly cause it? It happens both plugged in and not plugged in, but the battery has been dying quicker and once it didn't recognize it.

Funny thing is... it did it as soon as I posted that. If it can overheat quickly, then I can believe that. I had overheating problems with another laptop. Oh well... hopefully the wonderful people at Best Buy will give me a new fan...

I have found the problem... but there's no solution :( My graphics card isn't supported by Windows 7... found this out as I was trying out a new game and it wasn't working, went online etc.

So really... either get rid of Windows 7 or get a new graphics card... My hope is that the Best Buy people will be nice enough to say that my graphic card is faulty and because it is no longer made, they are going to have to upgrade =D

The changing of an o/s is a big change and should have been noted, oh well.

ATI Radeon 1200 series... went on the website and it something to the effect of "this graphics card does not support/is not supported by Windows 7... you're welcome to try the Vista drivers" haha.

Hrm having a quick look on the internet, the vista drivers should work, have you got the Catalyst Control Center downloaded? Also check the driver and windows 7 version you have are the same bit (32 or 64)

I have all of that downloaded and the correct 64-bit one downloaded... but my little troubleshooting center is still saying that it's having problems. Could the card itself be faulty? (Which would actually be ideal for me because it means a new one).
