I'm planning on buying a netbook. Lately I've had an increase in school work, and sharing a pc with 3 people who all need it is NOT convenient. Since my laptop and other desktop are gone, I'm gonna buy myself a nice netbook

Can someone help pick one from

www.futureshop.ca

For me? And prefferably $350 or less, would be nice.I'm on a tight budget.

Limited choices on that site...

Just definitely not the HP one. HP have a high rate of hardware failures. ASUS has the best ratings for hardware awesomeness, and have the top rated netbooks... also are relatively cheap for being awesome, but there's not an ASUS on there.

If you'd be willing to go up $50 I'd go with the Toshiba one.. Toshibas in general have good ratings as well.

ooo, i like the specs on that one, i might still be able to afford to too. Think i can run CSS on low graphics?

Haha worth a shot :) Steam is such a memory hogger it seems like that I'd be concerned about being able to run Steam on it before Counterstrike...

But yeah... Toshibas are worth it for the long run =D Love mine... had a Gateway laptop and that died in a year when the hinges broke off (yeah fail), my moms HP laptop died within a couple of years and she only does Word Processing essentially.

Ive had bad experiences with a previous toshiba, but i know the Satellite series is much better than my old one which toshiba told me did not exsist :confused1:

So yeah, ill take a look at that. Apparently it has 224MB integrated video RAM, should be able to run CSS then. And its got a nice 250GB Hard drive.

Apparently the windows 7 starter is really crappy though, but i intend to dual boot with ubuntu netbook remix.

Thanks a ton, ill probably look into this a bit more. Ill see what others post too :p

it's not that the starter version is crappy, it's just light. Really, really, light. Can't even change your desktop background on the starter version, I mean it was designed for lightweight computers with low power.

Keep in mind though that you're not paying 400 for better hardware in that netbook. That model would sell for about $330 if it shipped with WinXP instead of Win7. If you're not even going to use Win7 then don't buy a netbook with it pre-installed and you can save 50 bucks or more.

Agreed. Could you find one on www.futureshop.ca that has winxp?

Couldn't find one there, I bought one of these: [ame="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B002P3KMXA/ref=oss_product"]http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B002P3KMXA/ref=oss_product[/ame] and I love the damn thing.

Buy the Alienware m11x! http://www.dell.com/content/products/productdetails.aspx/alienware-m11x?c=us&cs=19&l=en&s=dhs&~ck=mn

lol jk, way to expensive! and proly got some cooling problems in there too.

But seriously, if you are looking for a netbook just for school, don't go hunting around for one with specs to maybe be able to play CS:S. Just look for one in your budget that has the highest specs. If it so happens to be able to play CS:S great, if not at least you didn't overspend, and can still get your school work done.

Im really against the windows 7 starter thing :/ But it does look decent.

Hey, whatever you choose, just wanted to let you know that netbook are STRICTLY for business use. Ive tried playing Bejeweled on it & it BARELY runs. Graphics are so poor (Bejeweled runs smoother on my desktop), so I highly suggest you leave the gaming to your current desktop (or w/e u use to play your games). With the current specs of the systems, theyre best suited for business/ school work.

good choice, Win7 isn't great but there isn't much you will do on this netbook that can't be done in win7. I'm probably going to slap a nice linux distro on mine eventually anyways

Ill probably take the futureshop one, since i have one only like 30 mins from me.

I've looked up the specs, i can probably run CSS really low on it, so that'll be nice for when someone calls me on to admin or something, or just for little 30 minute sessions of gaming.

Ill probably immediately dual boot ubuntu netbook remix

Ill check that out!

Thanks for all the replies! keep em comin ;)

Hey xSimon, you might want to read the reviews on that netbook you found on Amazon here, they do a really good job of showing reviews better here: http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834220551

I would highly suggest the netbook I told you about. I dont think the 2 extra hours are worth the fuss in my mind. Besides, anything over 5 hours for a laptop, not to mention a netbook, is plenty (imho).

wont be needing over 5 hours anyway :p

I'll check them both out and compare them

Just because it says 5 hours doesn't actually mean it will run for 5 hours, its more like 5 hours with the screen on the lowest brightness and maybe the screen saver running. My Macbook pro has a "revolutionary" 8 hour battery but it really only last 4 hours why web browsing and school work and maybe 2.5-3 why doing video editing or gaming. If I were you get the one with the most battery if you plan on working on the go, and what ever that battery life is divide it by two and that will be the real amount.

The Asus Eee PCs are decent. However, I would do more research than just asking on a tech forum before dropping $400 on a netbook. Each one will have its pros and cons that only you can decide between. You should think about what you plan on using it for too. Gaming on a netbook is most likely not going to happen. My friend can play WoW at minimal settings at 10fps on his Acer, not made for gaming at all.
