1. My computer will not shut down or restart properly, after it closes the desktop and gets to the "Windows is shutting down......." screen nothing happens after waiting for 20 minutes, then I just hold the button.

2. Programs (only happened with WMP and Browsers so far) freeze the desktop so that the mouse cursor still moves but I cant minimise, shut down, or anything else.

3. I can't find anything Malicious after a full scan with both Malewarebytes Anti Malware and AVG Free Edition.

Try booting into safe mode and shutting down then, if it works then it might be a driver problem.

I had the same problem. Can't remember what the actual cause was. I'll try to think of what it was.

My xp had issues too. Mostly being that it would shut down the system, but then the power supply & hard drive would keep running until you hit the power button.

Reinstalling the system did loads of help

I'm using a Dell Netbook, so reinstalling WinXP is not an option.

You didn't make a restore disk? If you have a friend with a WinXP install disk you could do a repair on it or even better wipe your drive and install with that disk (assuming you know what your serial key is...)

really when windows breaks for the most part the fastest and easyist way to fix it is formate and reinstall this will fix any issue that is software based.

There is no DVD drive on a Netbook. My netbook is my secondary computer, but I still don't want it to have problems. I will try the safe mode thing today and get back to you guys.

You could use one of those portable USB ones. My friend has a netbook and it works like a charm even if the netbook is broken. And if you can get a copy of windows, put it in, go to the recovery console and run a: chkdsk /r it will give you a report when it's finished and type: exit in the console when it's finished. I remembered part of the problem with mine is that I had bad sectors on my hard drive and this will "fix" that problem. If nothing else it will at least eliminate a possible issue.

Try this. Open a command prompt: Start > Run > CMD

Then type SFC /scannow

It'll scan to make sure all of your windows files are in tact. If it finds something then it'll ask you to direct it to a copy of the windows install disk. Just download a copy of XP Home or Professional, whichever you use and put the files on a USB stick. Tell it to look at the USB for the files and it should repair everything.

Ok, I started up the computer in Safe Mode, then turned it off again. It turned off at normal speed. NO FREEZE! It still freezes in non-safe shutdown though....

What does this mean and how can I fix it.

it means the issue is related to a driver or something that runs at startup

You most likely installed something right before this started happening, remove it...
