SSD... yea or nay?

for running OS's and apps there are really nice cause there random seek time blow harddrives out of the water. but for most of my work there not so suited they still write continuous large files much slower than 7,200 rpm drive and the there are pretty close for read times of continuous large files.

so it is really a use thing if your working with large amount of audio or video they can limit you more than a normal 7,200 rpm or 10,000 rpm drive but because there random access so fast the accel at working with lots small bits of data at once.

edit: there are a lot of people who use both they use the SSD for the operating system and program files than a HD for data storage.

Definitely a good performance difference, but regular SATA drives are great for the price.
 
Got me the Intel 80GB G2 drive the day it was released. Never regretted it one bit. My bro has an identical machine as i minus the SSD and Xonar Sound card and i must say, using his i7 @ 3.8 is pretty annoying now. Dont get me wrong, the rigs were fast, but once you go SSD, you will wonder how you did without it.

An Intel SSD is the single best performance upgrade you can make for speeding up your rig, especially if your already on a nice setup overclocked. DO IT ! NOW !

Of the 80 gigs, i have about 25 free . Some small apps, STEAM is about 40 gigs and windows is right around 15 i believe. Loading games such as Crysis, Farcry 2 , and MW2, my machine loads about 4 times as fast. Other words, his loading bar gets to about 1/4 of the way when mine is done.

Other companies make alright ones, but Intel is hands down the best.
 
I have a Corsair P128. It's amazingly fast, but I must say I regret the purchase. Prices have fallen significantly since my purchase, and are going to continue to fall rapidly for the next year at least. It was a bad investment.

At this point in time, I would only buy an SSD for a laptop, not a desktop.

Wait a while until you get a SSD. As posted, they are dropping in price.

Also, a while ago, there was a post that they will have a new way of manufacturing SSD's that will make them insanely cheap compared to now.

I'd give SSD's like a year and see if this comes true. So i would basically wait until then to get an SSD.
 
Meh. Not really worth the price now, especially with 1TB drives being under $100. SSD's are just too expensive at the moment. Not really worth the increase in performance.
 
I could never have waited another year for prices to come down, i could hardly wait for the G2 drive to release. You must use it to appreciate it to not mind the price ( or get it as a gift :-) Really, i mean if you dont mind spending 1500 on a nice rig , whats an extra couple hundred bucks to get an insane performance increase. I really feel that an i7 @ 4ghz or any processor @ 4 ghz is ALMOST useless without one as far as loading/responsiveness/etc . Just my opinion.

This is very very wrong. IOPS, random read/write, and a number of other things will still be far slower. Even if you take 10x15k drives, you will NEVER get close to the IOPS achieved by 1 SSD.

You dont have to have a degree in math to see it's not just MB/s that you rate a drive in.

I have 3 SSD's, 2 intel and 1 Gskill, and there is nothing in you can do to a current pc to upgrade it more then upgrade to a SSD. I use a raid a mixture of RAID and SATA setups for data drives etc, but SSD is the way to go. The new Intel x25-v is pushing all the new trim drives down in price(hence the 40MIR) on a single 60 gig drive being offered across most manufacters
