For some reason, when i boot my laptop, it has a black screen saying that windows need to run a consistency check on my hard drive, its never done this before, ive skipped it once because i didnt know what it was...

but now it thinks its messed with my programs, a few days ago eve online stopped working because it said something become corrupt and i uninstalled it, and just today it said Firefox had some kind of error and it would not start at all (i just re installed it)

but idk how to stop this "consistency check" from happening.

Help?

ive looked around online but i havent found many solutions for this problem.

That could be a sign your hard drive is dying. If you go into your system logs (right click on computer, select manage, select event viewer, windows logs, then system, look for any error messages. If you see lots about hard drive errors, you would want to do a S.M.A.R.T. check and run diagnostics on it.

What kind of laptop do you have?

Well, in most modern PC's/laptops S.M.A.R.T. is enabled at bootup, you don't always have to be in Windows to use S.M.A.R.T.

My S.M.A.R.T. told me one of my HDD's are failing because they were not plugged in all the way.

So just be careful when you trust S.M.A.R.T.

But, if you were REALLY failing, a lot more would go wrong than just the consistency check.

In Vista, I had this every time I started up.
Anything effects this, ranging from if you shut your computer off improperly to your hard drive failing.

My problem was I had my iPod plugged in and it didn't have enough room. But Vista thought it was an external storage device and kept wanting to format it. Which is why I got the message.

If you interrupt a consistency check, it MAY damage files or cause the dreadful BSoD, I learned this the hard way. However, the check can also occur from already damaged files.

.MP3's, .AVI's, .MPG's, and so forth.

Try this just to be sure:
Start > Run > "sfc.exe"(System File Checker, it'll tell you if any important files are damaged, sometimes it shuts Vista up.)

To disable it completely, Method 1:
CHKNTFS is a utility that has been developed by Microsoft to disable disk checking on certain drives at Windows startup. To use this utility go to Start –> Run –> cmd.

If you want to disable check disk on C: drive, use the following command on command prompt.

chkntfs /X C:

To disable it completely, Method 2:
To disable automatic disk checking at Windows startup through registry, go to the following registry key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager

In the right hand pane, double click BootExecute.

The default value of the key is autocheck autochk *

* means every drive is checked for consistency. Just add /K:C at the end before *. /K switch will disable autocheck on C: drive at Windows startup. So the final value should look like this:

autocheck autochk /k:C *
