I installed COD4 on my Laptop, the same one ive been using to play CSS, TF2, HL2, DoD, Ins and a couple of other games. And when i go to start up COD4 its just goes to a black screen and nothing responds. I hit ctrl al delete but it doesnt pull anything up. Anyone know how to fix this? Im on windows 7 btw

Control Panel, Hardware and Sound, Sound, Recording Tab, Right click in the white area and hit "Show Disabled Devices" and enable 'Stereo Mix'

Also.. any quality over 44100Hz can crash it.. If you are using realtek you can change that in your realtek options (orange speaker)

Didnt work. But this same problem did happen with Elder Scrolls Oblivion and when i cahnges the resolution to the same as my native resolution it was fixed. Is there anyway i can change the resolution of COD4 without loading up the game? like editing a config file?

Right click on your COD shortcut file, then click properties and add this line to the end of the target

-width=640 -height=480

From there you can change it in-game to your native resolution.

Well I meant the retail version, you should still have a shortcut file to the game somewhere, if not you can make one.

Can also try safe mode... if it gives u the option.

ran it on that 640 x 420 or whatever. still didnt work, im thinking if i can edit a config file to set it to run at my current resolution it will work. because oblivion did the same thing but it pulls up a menu that allows me to change the settings without actually going into the game.

Safe mode would most likely work to reset every setting. Try to add this to the target too, -refreshrate=60

It'll look something like that. Add the text after the .exe
