hi guys, recently i downloaded a game in iso file, and because i have experience with downloading and unpacking i am quit suprised about my problem, normally you can unpack an iso file and open up the maps to the install directory after a couple of unpackmoves, but this time i can't, now you guys wonder, why don't you just burn the damm thing, well my dvdstation is a little bit broke, for some reason it keeps getting stuck each time i try to brun, so i tried unpacking the iso file to a rar file, normally if you then unpack the rar file you should see the instalmaps but not this time, when i try to unpack the rarfile it turns back an iso. any help/advise please. how can i open up the iso file to the installation files without burning a dvd+.

Have you tried using 7-zip?
It works for browsing ISO's for me.

Aside from that you can use something like DaemonTools or Alcohol 120% to mount the image and then browse the contents via a virtual DVD drive. Can also install it that way.

And I hope it's not an illegal download =)

yeah i used 7-zip and similar programs, and if its illegal or not, well that's not something to talk about it in public, ow yeah great idea about a virtual dvd drive, i'll try that out.

ah mounting to a virtual drive resolved the problem, thanx. thread closed for my part ;).

WinRAR from RARLabs seems to handle ISOs well. They have a free version that will nag you on start. If the nag message bugs you you can get the paid version.

I've noticed that errors w/ winrar are usually file specific... i.e. something is messed up w/ the file content or when the rar was created.

The simplest way.. is to mount it to a virtual drive.. either using magic iso or daemon tools lite.. then just explore it like you would if it were burnt.. virtual drive mounting is common and very easy.

He's trying unpack it instead of doing that

If hes trying to unpack then I believe that either 7-zip or Winrar are good tools for it. But as said, the simplest way to just use it is to use a virtual drive, I prefer 'Virtual Clone Drive' over Daemon Tools or Alcohol 120 for various reasons, but all of them work. And just because hes doing this doesn't mean he is pirating things guys, I've made backups of all my disc games (yay for steam ) using various programs and use these tools to run them so I don't have to worry about lost or scratched discs.

daemon and magic iso work well.

yes but a ISO is a image of a whole filesystem sometimes the structure metadata of that filesystem is needed so mounting is always going to be more successful than extract the contents of the ISO.

Mounting to virtual is faster whether you want to unpack or just install. Once mounted it acts like a regular dvd-drive and you can "explore" it and find what you want and then copy/paste, or just install.

It's faster and more efficient because:
1. You are not wasting time decompressing it
2. You are not wasting space by having the .iso and the decompressed folders on your drive at the same time

If you mount it you can install the files onto your regular Pc instead of having to hassle yourself with other software that specialize in unpacking .iso files and so forth. Winrar won't handle every disc image file type in which mounting comes in handy.
