These are simple things that you can do to keep your computer running great!

- First, every time you go on the internet DO NOT USE EXPLORER. It's a horrible internet program that allows mostly anything into your computer. Use FIREFOX or SAFARI.

- Second, every week or so run a system De-frag. You can find this under start/accesories/systemtools/defrag. Let it cleam your computer.

- Third, Run a virus scan on ALL FILES you download from an unknown site.

-Fourth, Run a system scan using your virus protection program every once in awhile.

**don't be afraid to correct me! I learn from my mistakes or unknowing of things! Thanks!**

I reccomend using a third party defragment program, the windows one sucks. Defraggler works nicely.

Internet explorer sucks, very true.

Virus scanning from time to time won't be nessecary if your pc scans in the background, or checks each downloaded file.

I use Advanced System Care and Glary Utilities to clean up my computer as for Security i use IObit Security 360 and COMODO Internet Security. Using these programs has kept my computer running at top speeds and kept everything clean. COMODO is IMO one of the best free Antiviruses/Firewalls. Only real complaint about it would be when i install a new game/program it pulls up alot of little messages asking me to allow or deny stuff, but this also stops random/dangerous stuff from accessing or using your computer. There has even been a couple of times where a file was being run and it was about to allow another computer to access mine. All i had to do was hit deny and no harm was done.

A few things to bear in mind if your computer is running slow:

Do not just run out and buy upgrades. Computer slowdowns can be caused by many things, as well as insufficient hardware. Even if you buy an upgraded piece of hardware, you probably will bottleneck on something else in the system unless you are careful. Do some research on the hardware in your computer before you consider upgrading so you can find what will have the most effect for the least money.

Beware software upgrades. Much of the time the old software runs faster than new software because it has less features. If you upgrade your platform, it isn't very noticable, or may seem to run faster, but a side by side comparison on the same machine will tell you which is better.

Beware Vista. They have vastly improved it from its origonal release, but it still is slower than Windows 7, and considerably slower than XP.

Run MSConfig. Many programs will add keys into the registry that cause the programs to start automatically. Many things, like adobe updater, java updater, microsoft office speed launch, acrobat reader speed launch... are unnecessary. The updaters will run when you use the program, and the other ones only slightly speed up the start of those programs, at the expense of system performance when you don't need them. Disabling the programs in MSConfig's startup tab can greatly speed up performance (temporarly). Something even better if you are comfortable with it is going into the registry and removing the keys that are listed under location in MSConfig. Most programs will end up adding themselves back in eventually, so do it occasionally.

Disable automatic backups and defragmenting. Make sure to maintain good habits of doing these, but having them run on your terms prevent them from running when you are doing something that requires system performance.

Disable automatic updates. I know I am going to be yelled at for this, but it does keep downloading updates from taking up any of your internet, and frees up the processing power that would be used by the updates.

Don't have a tv tuner recording programs. Yes, I have a tv tuner recording on my gaming comp because the slowdown isn't very much on that machine, but if your computer is slowing down, this could speed things up greatly.

The amount of lols I get when I have to use IE on someone else's computer, it takes forever to load. x.x Firefox ftw? :P

I haven't defragged my comp since I got it :P which was around the middle of January, I'll do that tonight xD

Also, I was told one of the best antivirus was Webroot, it has worked great for me so far. When I got my computer from best buy, geek squad put it on there. Anyone else heard of, or use Webroot? I'd love to see opinions about it (:

I use Webroot, Its a little expensive and while navigating menus it can hang. Other than that it works great, I haven't had any issues with it.

When I defrag, like someone said above, Windows' defragmenter isn't that great. I use the Windows Defrag then follow it up with Defraggler.

Windows 7 by far has provided the biggest boost in proformance for me.

Windows Vista, had alot of instability issues with it and sometimes BSOD. Win7 have not expericed any.

Well being a gamer, in my experiences running the scan in the back round lags me out like crazy. It takes up wayyy to much CPU.
