So, I'm using a Radeon 4870 with an AMD 7750 @ 3.1 GHz with G.SKILL 4GB 800 MHz RAM DDR2 with a 780G mobo :( .

Anyways, I get 100 fps most of the time on 1024 res and I was wondering if that's normal? Cause I keep hearing people with worse graphics cards getting wayy more fps and I have no idea how to get that FPS. I played Crysis on high at around 25-30 FPS average...
On the stress test I average 250 fps.

Are these higher end cards made for higher resolutions, so should i turn my res or is this the card's max potential??

i have fps_max 101 if i don't it will fluctuate a lot!
 
100fps on a full server is fine. Anything above 60 will do.
 
With that graphics card good job getting 100+ FPS, I average 150-170 on the office server, so yea anything above 60 is good, but if you have your rates all jacked up, it won't matter what FPS you get.
 
Crysis is very CPU heavy, so the Athlon you have is the reason of the lower frame rates.
As for CS:S, like everyone's said; anything over 60 is fine.
 
25-30fps in Crysis with that setup is pretty normal. The CPU is slightly bottlenecking your GPU.

The easiest way to tell is when you lower your resolution down and see that the FPS rate is exactly the same.
 
The human eye can see around 30 fps so anything about that is just over extra!
What is all that extra for?
-Smoothness As long as the game feels smooth to you when you move and look around don't worry about what they are getting lol!
I have a xfx ati hd4850 and I get 136 fps on lost coast stress test

as long as the game dose not jitter while your playing your AOK!

But you also have a dual core so people like me with a slightly lower class graphics card with a quad core cpu would get more performance

Some say we can see 15, or 24 (movies, TV shows) and some say 120. Regardless, you can still notice a difference between 30fps and 60fps. But, 60 should look just as smooth as 300.

So do you guys think it would be worth it to get a quadcore?
Some people say it really isn't at the moment, as most games don't utilize all the cores?
 
It's definitely worth getting a quad core, because of how cheap they have gotten lately. But, CSS only uses 1 core I believe, and Crysis uses 2. In future games (which we are already seeing with BC2) we will see more quad core support.
 
there are a lot of newer games and stuff that are utilizing the cores which does boost frames, but source probably won't. CSS is very CPU intense, but at only 1024x768 those frames do seem a low depending exactly what your frame rate gaps are.
for the price you can get quad cores for, they are definitely worth it over the dual cores
 
The reason people say 60fps is plenty, is because your monitors have a refresh rate of 60hz. Meaning even if your card is cranking out 300fps, your monitor can only display it at a rate of 60 frames per second. If you have a 120hz monitor, you could see 120fps. Hence why a 120hz monitor seems smoother and more responsive.

Regarding the OP, you could have your fps max at 100 frames, which would enable your card to not produce more than 100 frames.

Either way, 60+ frames is plenty. No reason to gripe that you're not getting 120+ frames.

I wish i could get high fps like that, i only get about 35 lol. Nice Intergrated graphics card+ low ram= useless :( Btw, I'm getting a a780gm-a ultra today! I'm so excited!
 
i don't think is a problem game wise to only have 60 fps, i think its more what the rig is supposed to be capable of
