Thinking of upgrading my 920 to a 930

Good morning everyone . After reading some reviews, i am tempted to switch up my CPU to the new i7 930 . I did not think the numbers were gonna be too much different from the 920, but here it shows otherwise.

The way i look at , the upgrade would cost me about $50 after selling my chip and getting the 930 from MC for $199. All thoughts and criticism are welcome :)
 
I personally would not do it. In my books it is not enough of a difference to justify the purchase. Especially when you could use the money to get an aftermarket cpu cooler instead and overclock the 920, this is especially true if you have a D0 stepping 920.


Edit: I am assuming you have not OC'd the 920 already, if you have, feel free to ignore me :)
 
You could justify buying a 930 over a 920, but switching from a 920 to a 930 is not worth it.
 
If you already have a nice cooler and have a little extra money, I would just upgrade. It's just $50 extra.
 
Don't do it, not worth it at all. Waste of money, performance increase is negligible. It's like <1 FPS in games.
 
Even on C0 stepping a 920 is excellent on OC'ing. Either C0 or D0, the 920 is still worth keeping and over clocking a bit. It runs decent @ 3.0Ghz on stock but above that go with after market coolers.

Its not too hard to OC the 920, just modify the Base Clock (BCLK) and the CPU voltage. Right now Im at 180 BCLK and 1.18725v (or close) and running at 3.6GHz. Have a N520 CoolerMaster AM HS and this baby runs like gravy.

Right now im clocked at 3.8 24/7 and im just below intel max spec voltage using a noctua cooler in push pull . Temps have been low 70's using IBT using 16 threads/max memory.

I think i would just like it to run a bit cooler and for the few extra bucks, it would run alot cooler . Thanks for the replies all. Next time im at MC , ill just have to see how impulsive i am that day... see how it turns out

same here, the current 3.8ghz is my 24/7 limit without using too much voltage and getting too hot.
 
i wish i had $$ to upgrade to a i7 or any quad core for that matter. being a college student does have its limitations...
 
Yeah upgrading from a 920 to a 930 wouldn't be a great decision unless you were hell bent on getting somewhat higher overclocks. The performance is negligible and it makes no sense. However upgrading from a 920 to the 980x or later to be released 970 would be a different story though
 
UMMMM yeah. Got one. I mean two. Well Sheeeebbbzzz got one for both of us . Shes at 4.070 ghz w/ 1.3 vcore . Temps are still high at 80c , 78f ambient temp. Mine has a problem, wont let the ram go above 1600 mhz . My last chip i could take the RAM from stock 1333 to 1750 no problem. I can set it just below 1600 and be just fine, setting right at 1600 results in instant failure. Hmmm.. Still got tons of tweaking to do with this one then we'll post some screens.

update- got the RAM at 1600 mhz, but IBT and windows only recognize 2 gigs while CPU shows all 6gb...

Another strange thing... When overclocked to 4.2 ( 191x22 ) , windows does recognize 6gb of ram , BUT ONLY 2.00 GB USABLE. This is with the ram under 1600, 1528 to be exact. My bro's chip dont have this wall however i seem to be running much much cooler.

As of last nite and lots of coffee, we have 4004 mhz (182x22) DRAM @ 1456mhz (182 x8 ) using 1.3vcore and 1.175 qpi (stock) in BIOS, underload cpu-z is picking up 1.264vcore and a 5-run IBT w/16 threads using "very high" yields me a high temp of 73c or 75c.

The last chip would need alot of voltage and get into the low 90's @ 4 ghz, i am happy with it so far... Just this 1600 mhz ram issue and 4.2ghz issue is bothering me. Again, the last chip would get my stock 1333 ocz ram to 1750 stable using Maxed out QPI and 1.66vdimm. I have tried upping the QPI and vdimm to 1.66 with no luck. Reads 6 gigs/ 2 usable.
Any ideas?
 
I have no idea but just to fortify my statement a little more. Everyone's saying you will probably not notice the performance increase, it's not worth the money, it will only OC a little bit better, etc.

Who really cares though. It's only $50 for a better CPU. Plus, dbee seems like quite the enthusiast. $50 to do what he enjoys is a small price to pay. Let the man have a little fun! :)
 
Running 20c cooler @ 4ghz than before works for me ... Wasn't able to keep that as a 24/7 setting. Wow , the difference in voltage and temps for 4.2 is insane.
 
Got her to 4.2 ghz using only 1.328 vcore . OH YEAH. IBT maxes out to 82c and gaming maxes out to 64c . The 920 wouldn't come close to this, not even booting at 4.2 . True, i do not notice the difference in performance since there really is none. Anyone else using a 920 C0 i would recommend doing the same. And the upgrade ending up costing about $12 .
