GTX 470 and 480 reviews are out

The prices will drop after the initial release. The 5870 and 480 are essentially the same for about the same price, same with the 5850 and 470. However, none of these reviews have compared ATI 10.3 drivers with PhysX games both on DX11, so it's not really good comparison at this point.

Since ATI and nVidia have both maxed PCIe's power capabilities, time for a new slot!

Ugh, and I just got a new motherboard for my i7.
Why can't we just overclock our PCI-E slots?

That's not what I meant...

High-end GPUs all have additional power connectors via the Power Supply. Here's how it works out for power.

The PCIe x16 slot: 75-watts
First 6-pin PCIe power connector: 75-watts
2nd 6-pin PCIe power connector: 75-watts
additional 2-pin connector (6+2 pin PCIe power connector): 75-watts

Total power: 300 watts Maximum power usage.

Each card is only capable of having a 6-pin PCIe power connector and another 6+2 pin PCIe power connector, so all together, each card can only use 300-watts total power.

Now, in terms of bandwidth between the GPU and the motherboard, we haven't hit the limit yet, and there's no reason for them to change the slot type. PCI express is an incredibly efficient slot type, and I don't see that being phased out anytime soon. If they need to change anything, they'll more than likely change either the bus speed or the bandwidth before they actually change the slot type.

No need for concern at all. :)

^ extra months of R&D and this is what they give out? NVidia, I am disappoint. You gave us a hot (not the good kind of hot either), power hungry card that only real gains will be in folding, otherwise a 5870 is still a better buy.

One thing i am not dissapointed with is the prices. Was expecting something along the lines of $399 or even more on the 470. If i were in need of a GPU upgrade, i wouldn't think twice. But really, how much better could the performance get over a 260 ? Besides... I'm playing TF2 95% of the time . MW2 runs incredible maxed out as it is. YES, maybe when some more DX11 titles come around, this may be the way to go. Cant wait to see what these guys go for on ebay...

Well, I'm buying a 470 for the tessellation performance, and PhysX, and just to replace my PoS card right now.

Take another look. $350 on the GTX 470. So its def less than your $399 mark that you mentioned. Maybe I misread. ehh. ANYWAY.

I was saving my pennies for these for SLI, however my first HDD in RAID took a dump, broke down and bought a Vertex SSD from OCZ instead. My 9600GTs in SLI need to last just a bit longer. :glare:

According to the MaxPC article, the 480 stomps the 5970 at tessellation (a big feature of DX11). So i think that the 480 might be a better card once DX11 matures

hell by then there will be an entire new generation of cards, if not new mobo slots of some sort also, hahaha

not true, There are cards that have 3 PCIe power connectors (EVGA GTX 285 classifeied) We can never max out the power for PCIe power connectors, we can just add more ;)

My brother still has a GTX 295 *NEW* stashed in his closet... He can't use it cus dell pc's are barely upgrade-able. Hmmm....

I'm sorry, but that's an epic fail

the PSU came with only, i think 1 or 2 6pin pci express connector. I told him to get a gtx285 but he wouldn't listen... And there isnt' enough molex connectors for adapters too.... yesyes dell makes it very hard to upgrade
