Is there a way to reduce my ping in TF2?

I noticed players with 17 ping kicking butt. I noticed a sniper with 150 ping who was able to shoot ANYONE because he could shoot a good 5 feet behind where they were and still get the kill.

My 70-90 ping? It's a nightmare: I shoot people in the chest, game says I missed. No *Ding!* no numbers showing damage. Despite my sniper dot being on his sternum when I fired.
A soldier swings his pickaxe literally 5 feet behind me when coming in from the side:

. M->

S = Soldier

M= Me

. = Where he hit

-> = Directions I and he were going/facing.

He killed me.

Yeah, so my ping seems to be that cursed zone where every shot and swing works against me. Is there ANY way I can reduce my ping? :\

I would try out that guide too. Also, are you sure your internet isnt just slow?

Ping isn't necessarily a direct correlation with problems like that. I basically agree with all of the above, first try and see if it's your computer and therefore easily fixable before blaming your connection which is not as easy.

I have verizon high-speed. :\ I will try that link, though

Also, I have a brand new PC with a Radeon HD4350 and an intel I5 quad core processor.

Well, I set cl_cmdrate to 100 'cl_cmdrate 100' and my ping did not drop (nor did my choke or loss go up from 0, thankfully) should I make it higher. Scratch this. I set it back to 33 because my choke jumped to 17 while spectating a medic. It seems I get a good mount of choke when watching people. o.O

Turns out I can't do a thing with that guide because I have NO idea what I am doing. >.> If anyone on my friends list sees this, give me an IM. I am seating PL at the moment while I tinker and cook dinner.

That's another point. Ping is just the time it takes for basically a single bit to transfer to the server and back. Your actual speed when sending large amounts of data (like I dunno.... TF2) may be drastically reduced from backlog.

Welp, I found out why it sometimes seems 'unfair' to me. Seems like I get 40-50 choke once I start actually runnign around. NO matter what I put in, this does not seem to alter my ping or choke. :\

not tryin to sound like a hater but i used to have Verizon and i suffered alot of lag(and random disconects) Verizon has horrible bandwidth, i later switched to road runner cable and any lag problems i have is generally because i have other things on my net unknowing (like a downlaod i forgot or a program auto updating) or the server im on is foreign and crappy or the server its self is a bad server or haveing problems on its end.

But yeah try what they said if it doesn't help and your pc is fine i'd say look into another provider if available. i generally get 60-70 ping on ego tf2 servers and most of the time i son;t get alot of lag and when i do other people are complaining about it to so its most likely server side

Well, turns out Verizon is pretty cruddy.

Mypassword has randomly changed from ANYTHING I use.

The secret question 'What was your first pet?' is somehow WRONG, despite me knowing damn well the name of my first pet. I think they are messing with me. >.>

lol i HATED Verizon plus they stole 190 dollars off us and refused to refund it but i always got lag with them and it always randomly discounted usually when i was about to win a battle in bf2 or while my squad and I are pwning everyone and im the only medic

If you can ( this may help. It helped me with my bad ping) Double click steam -> Settings -> Downloads and switch to cable/fiber optics setting -> click "ok" And retry TF2. Mine was too low and turns out it robbed me internet power by having it too low of a setting making it have a terrible ping. Try that it may work. :)

My brother is having the same problem with the high choke, but he is in the dorms at a college, so it may just be your connection

lower your rates, the defaults are

rate 20000
cl_cmdrate 30
cl_updaterate 20
cl_interp_ratio 2
cl_interp .1

then make sure you get no choke with those settings...

optimal rates for TF2 would be (for high speed connection):
rate 30000
cl_cmdrate 67
cl_updaterate 67
cl_interp_ratio 1
cl_interp 0.015

ALSO
Make sure your cl_interp = cl_interp_ratio / cl_updaterate
cl_interp_ratio defaults to 2

so default cl_interp values would be
.1 = 2 / 20
optimal:
.015 = 1 / 67

If you kill me because of this enlightening info I will be mad! =)
j/k

WEll, I will do what NUFAN said. Also, I talked to Verizon. I was paying for 3 Mbps. I have upgraded to 7 mbps for now.

Part of the problem could be that other people in your house are using your connection or someone could be taking up bandwidth on your wireless. Like everyone is saying, Verizon offers a poor bandwidth allowance and even someone checking their Facebook can have an impact.

Yeah. I turned off wireless broadcasting and I am wired in so only I can use it now. On the first, I get my 7mbps cap upgrade.

AKI:

It does sound like your rates are at least PART of your issue. Start with the default rates and increase in 10% increments until you start to see choke. Then move back down to the last stable set of rates.

Remember to put your desired rates into an autoexec.cfg file so that they will load whenever you start a game.

I'm assuming with your recent network/internet connection changes that rates are your biggest problem for now.

Just be thankful persistent, horrible packetloss isn't a problem for you :crying:

Well, most my rates are defaulting at what has been said anyways. I think cmdrate is 33 instead of 30, but that's the only difference.
