So everytime i try to play a source game it comes up with the error hl2.exe has encountered a problem and its driving me insane i have tried everything deleting the cache, reinstalling the games, defragging, replacing the hl2 files and so on. from what i see on google no one has found a good fix!
the only thing i havnt tried yet was reinstalling steam but im gunna wait to see if there is anything else i can do to fix this before i resort to that!

Thanks for the help meens alot!

Is it windows 7? Because if it is, then can you show us all the details of the error report?

..Excuse me, but for clarity purposes?

Are you getting a DEP error? "Windows Data Execution prevented hl2.exe from starting."
Or just the same old program error? "hl2.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close."

i have the same problem but i could play but sometimes it crashes. :D
and TF2 hates me.

old program error and i dont have windows 7 i have XP

If you do not mind Mr. Orangejuice, may you add me on STEAM?
Rickeh696969

If you are unwilling to do this, may you please download and run this program?
http://go.trendmicro.com/free-tools/hijackthis/HijackThis.exe

After you have ran the program, please select "Do a system scan and save a log file."
After it's complete, it will open Notepad, please dump all information from that program in this thread.
This program is designed to give me information about what is running at the same time you try to launch "hl2.exe"
It is very privacy-sensitive and will not tell me anything I shouldn't need to know.

Edit: PMS, if it's still happening, I'd be more than willing to assist you as well. ^_^

Thanks for the response, the things I have bolded out has caught my attention.

Based on that, I recommend that scan your computer for bad things.
These are the tools I use:
Ad-Aware Pro(Home/Free works just as well.)
Norton's suite of security tools.
Malware Bytes(Takes most of it out).

Worse comes to worse, I'll explain to you what ComboFix is.

Remove/Disable/Un-Install Norton and any of Symantec's products. You should be fine after that. Norton has quite the nasty habit of smashing bits on internet-based games causing an internal defense program to disable functionality for the core files. If uninstall is difficult (SNAFU+norton/status-quo) then use the Norton Removal Tool and/or nonav to fully remove the TCP/IP dependencies that Norton LOVES to install for you.

Also, the bold items shown above are harmless with the exception of AOL services. AOL and anything from America Online WILL FRY YOUR MACHINE. Uninstall AOL immediately if you would like to keep your machine's security above the point where your Steam Pass is readily available to hackers. If you have an absolute need to use AOL Instant Messenger, get Gaim or another *nix-based program. Don't let 'ol Oscar (AOL's dirty little secret daemon) destroy your machine.

For replacement: ANYTHING other than Symantec and McAffee will give you some level of useful protection. I would suggest COMODO Internet Security. It is what I use and it's quite powerful. It is, however, a bit difficult to install. Other suggestions include AVG, Avira's Anti-Vir, and AVAST! Anti-Virus.

I hope you find this helpful,

-Angel ;)

I seen we've been talking on STEAM, so I may keep up to date, may you post in this thread as well?

If I am not mistaken, last thing I got was you telling me after you scanned with the tools, 200+ infections came up.

Anything labeled a bunch of letters is always suspicious as this is what "keyloggers" and other spyware use to hide their identity. ie; "ehdintiv.exe" and so forth.

The Weather program you have HAS been leaked to privacy issues in this past. ie, sending those annoying popups out of no where, installing malicious things, etc.

I agree with Angellas in the removal of AOL, but if this is not possible we'll disable/uninstall that toolbar via MSCONFIG/Uninstaller, if you want. ;)

Thanks! ^_^

OK, coming from Google, a lot of people had this problem, this is the steps I've seen:
1) Make an exception in DEP, even though it's a program error.
2) Uninstall toolbars(I don't know why, but it worked for "stupidburn666").
3) Reinstall STEAM.
4) System Restore to a point where STEAM Games were working, if there is one.
5) Adding local and network service to the administrator category(This should be last attempt only, apparently. However, I do NOT recommend this at all as this can create security holes. But this has fixed majority of people's problems with the crashing of hl2.exe)
6) Make sure your drivers and BIOS are up to date.

The one I recommend most out of all of those is to reinstall STEAM/drivers&BIOS because if you do this and it still happens then we can determine that STEAM itself is not a factor here.

I hope others here can help you, I'll continue to search.

alright well the whole malware thing didnt work so now im deleting the aol software!

Removing Norton is MORE important than removing AOL for fixing your issue. Removing AOL is for your future safety, not as a primary solution for your current issue.

I'm glad you have it fixed, OrangeJuice.

I'll see you in game to dominate! ^_^
