English Letter Question^^

Hey everyone

You probably wondering why i ask something that has nothing to do with gaming but I think my English teacher is wrong about something. (I live in Netherland).

Its about writing letters (proper letters). We learned that you end a letter with:

Yours Sincerely

BlackBird.

Or:

Your Faithfully,

BlackBird.

We learned that you use your Faithfully when you dont know the person you writing, and you use Sincerly, when you know the person.
I thought it was otherwise.

What is true?

Yes i means Yours. with the s. But when i use that? And when i use Sincerely?

Well it seems sort of odd (not wrong) to my America eyes to see "Yours Sincerely." As for when to use one valediction or another, I think it's up to you. IMHO

Nah i dont think its up to me There are rules for it like i said in my first post.
But i dont know these rules.

I am as well American so i see this as sort of strange. Depending on the Letter i am writing i use different endings. If i am writing to someone i do not know business wise i always use Your, Sincerely. When i am writing to someone i do not know it is almost always Yours Sincerely. If it is someone i know at all even meeting them once in person i use Yours, Truly.

I've seen "Sincerely yours" and "Faithfully yours" but that sorta sounds like your someones husband or wife

To be completely honest, I wouldnt use Faithfully. I have never heard of anybody using that.

Generally, on most of the letters I see it is just Sincerely, like so:


[Letter Main Body]

Sincerely,
FirstName LastName

OR

[Letter Main Body]

Yours Sincerely,
FirstName LastName



However it all depends on the situation and whom you are writing to. For example if I was writing to a friend I could say something like:

Smell ya later,
-FirstName

But if I was writing to someone I didnt know I would use:

Sincerely,
FirstName LastName

OR

Respectfully,
FirstName LastName


To be completely honest there really is no specified set of rules, however there is a generally accepted way to do it, and the accepted way varies greatly depending on the specific situation.

But like i said in my first post i have to use one of the 2, becaus of the rule i explains.
I just have to learn two things becaus 5 or 6 is too much Its important that i know the basics of english and the most important things

Hey, problem is you are were asking a question on a forum which is mostly visited by USA English speaking people while the question would refer to British English.

You would use "Yours sincerly" when you know the persons name and you would use "Yours Faithfully" when you do not know the persons name.

Yes, this is essentially how it should be. It wouldn't really matter if you did mix them up in real life, but for the exams its best to follow those guidelines.
