I was wondering if I could get some help.
At this point I have a p4 3.2 cpu
1 gig of ddr2 566
a radeon 9500 256mb card
and 450 watt power supply
and want to build a pc to run the games most of us play.
Considering the fact that I have 2 kids .
I know I will have to purchase the components slowly but I cant spend big money.
Any ideas???
Thanx in advance for your help.

What all do you need?
What is the main purpose of the computer?
What games do you play?
Average build is $400-$600, not including OS or monitor.

You're gonna have to build from scratch, probably the only things you will be able to keep will be any drives you have.

I recommend just saving up and building it all at once. If you buy stuff over a long period of time the first few things you bought will be outdated long before you're finished.

Unless you buy an i7. But it depends on how long the period of which you buy everything.
But yes, buy everything at once. And building from scratch = win.

Buy an i7.

But in all seriousness.. You're gunna' have to build from the GROUND UP.

For the time being, figure out how much RAM your motherboard will support and spend the $50 to max it out. That'll help quite a bit. :)

reuse:
PSU (til you can buy a better one)
Ram, if you decide to go AMD or Intel 775
Possibly case
HDD

I think you could get the rest of it for $450

I have built you a fairly powerful PC for the price. It offers maximum upgrade-ability. I can even make it cheaper if you're willing to get a less effective/cool case, GPU, drop down to DDR2 MB/RAM(I suggest not as the difference in price is like $5) and CPU.

Rosewill DESTROYER Case - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811147144
- I own this case. It's really great and it has a LOT of slots of fans if you want to add extra cooling.

Athlon II X3 3.0Ghz CPU - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819103843
- I do not own this CPU, but I own the Phenom II X3 2.8Ghz. The difference is no L3 memory. Don't worry about not having it.

ATI HD Radeon 4850 - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814102824
- This will run any game you desire on maximum settings ('cept Crysis). Unless you run it at 1080p then you'll need a card with 1GB of VRAM.

530W PSU - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817182199
- I have the same PSU, except i have the one with multiple 12V rails. This one is better.

Motherboard - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813157176
- DDR3 AM3 CPU socket. Gives much room for upgrades. With the way AMD makes their CPU's, you'll be able to get a 6 Core Phenom II X6 if you desired one in the future.

2GB DDR3 1600 Memory - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820211450
- 2GB will suffice for any game out at the moment, but I suggest you get a 2nd 2GB stick if you could afford it.

160GB HDD - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136075
- I have this HDD. It works great. I'd suggest a larger HDD if you can afford it though. New games are getting bigger and you won't be able to install more than ~10 large games with this HDD.

DVD Burner - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16827136168
- Very nice burner. Even has LightScribe support :)

Price: $480.38 including shipping. (United States)

I am going to have to start saving I guess.
I tried to max out the ram on my mobo. Supposed to handle 2 gigs but would only register 512mb with 2 gigs installed.
I built this pc about 8 years ago.
Thanks again for all of your help.
( It will peobably take me 2 years to save up $500 ):facewall:
Oh well , "It is what it is."

I had the same build not too long but then i upgraded to core i7 and i spent about $750

look at my sig for my system spec, only hardware that didn't change was the video cards and case and dvd rom lol
