Disable DEP. It's a useless feature that Microsoft built to piss IT Supporters off and interrupt programs.
When a program tries to access something it shouldn't, DEP comes up. This normally occurs on programs that tweak XP's feel/look, viruses, spyware, malware, Firewalls, and some anti-virus-scanners.

I can suggest that because you're trying to revert to original, the program is trying to change your GUI config, if a program does this that doesn't have a Microsoft signature, DEP says "Nope, lol noob."

Examples: Stardock.com is affiliated with Microsoft. Stardock signs all their programs by Microsoft's standard while ihaxurcomputernoob.com is NOT signed by Microsoft's standards. So if they supply a GUI altering program, DEP may come up.

It also has to do with memory pages, buffer overflow/overrun, and hardware/software related issues.

This also occurs if you change your feel/look from the Display properties while still having a program that does it for you installed and/or running.

Warning: By disabling DEP, you acknowledge all risks associated with that action. I am only supplying advice and should be considered into evaluation. eGO/Ric is not responsible for what probably won't, but may happen to your PC.

Edit: If you have done this all from XP, not using any 3rd party programs, I recommend you to check your computer for any malicious intrusions.

Uhm... one questions... it says;"select the program". What program do they mean? what program most i select? And i have SP3. not SP2.

Sorry for the late response Blackbird, please navigate to where the DEP tab is located.
Please click this radio:

Turn on DEP for essential Windows programs and services only.

Click OK on the warning message if any, restart.
If this does not fix your problem, navigate again to where the DEP tab is located and disable it entirely.

Don't worry about a buffer overrun message if you get it considering XP has patch this regardlessly if you have DEP on or off.
