i was wondering if i can play my xbox 360 on a computer monitor without my monitor being plugged into my computer or does it have to be

No it does not have to be plugged into your pc, but it does have to be plugged into a power outlet.

Um. Depends on if you have MORE THAN ONE input on your monitor.

The Xbox has a VGA cord that you can plug into 99% of LCD monitors.

You could have both the PC & the XBOX plugged in at the same time and switch between the two (My Samsung can).

BUT it's completely dependent on if your monitor supports it...

I used my monitor with my PS3 prior to getting my TV. I was connected with an HDMI, which gave me video AND audio. I don't know much about 360s, but if they use a VGA connection, I don't believe it can transmit sound.

VGA = VIDEO ONLY

HDMI = VIDEO & AUDIO

The only Xbox that i know for sure HAS an HDMI cable is the Elite. If you have the Arcade or Pro YOU DON'T HAVE HDMI.

If you don't have speakers that can take component audio from the VGA cable you won't get sound.

If your monitor doesn't have speakers you won't get sound (duh).

If your monitor HAS speakers, odds are it's a 3.5mm plug to plug into it.

The Xbox VGA package COMES with an adapter to convert the component audio into 3.5mm...

You should be all set.
