Winamp is the best,.. what is your problem with winamp? The onyl con I have ever seen to winamp is that it doesnt support surround sound yet.

It steals all of the file associations when a new upgrade comes out and then when you go to play something it wipes out your current playlist. From what I'm reading here I may as well stick with it.

Durring installation (including updates, which is really just a full install again because they arent incremental) there is an option that you can change to not associate files with it. It just happens to be on default so if you are the type of person to blindly click next at every screen then yes it will 'steal' them heh. Just look for it next time.

Also, When you click a file to open it - it does infact open it in winamp (and only it). If you want to open it to the end of your current playlist then right click the file and click "enqueue in winamp" that will just add it to the current playlist queue. I think that is what you want man. Also, you couls add the file using winamp, but i thing you will be all set here.

itunes- some songs come out as like broadcasts from radio stations...but if you get the right ones then it works fine

you can save your playlists.. and even create (and save^^) more than one of it. nothing gets lost if you accidentally double-click on a winamp associated file.

and btw.. when I double-click an mp3 its just playing that file.. my playlist remains untouched. oO
just sit down with a beer (or tea) and browse thru the preferences to check out all the options winamp delivers you - it might be worth it. ^^

Winamp for the win. Still, that program has put me through hell. It has major issues running in Vista. Occasionally I just have to re-install it, because it has become convinced there are two copies of it on the drive, and then the two of them start fighting, for they are jealous audio players.

Winamp is the best because of the plugins, but if you really want a new one, people have already listed the most polished alternatives. Both of which are pretty terrible.

Windows Media Player 11, that's the one i use and it's easy to use and detects every bit of music on your pc right from the start.

I use Winamp. Ive been using it for years actually. I like it because its easy and it has internet radio built into it when I'm in the mood for that. I've never been a fan of WMP, ever, but I do use it for videos only. And I only use iTunes to put music on my iPod and thats it.

I still love Winamp (sigh) and am upgrading to 5.5. I ALWAYS do a custom install of software but now and then it sneaks in an association and wipes my playlist. I'm going to start saving playlists although they were never really easy to get to play.

foobar2000 is by far the best. Supports many formats out of the box and VERY light weight.
If you're into customizing for looks, it's very customizable but it takes a bit of work. I use it for its functionality and just purely listening to music... I love it.
I also use it for masstagging my music 'cause it has a great masstagger.
