Title: Four Lions

Plot: A film so edgy that I could be re-purposed as a pair of bolt cutters.

Review: Four Lions is a dead pan comedy about a group of radicalized British Muslims who want to become terrorists. That's right, you read that correctly...a comedy about Islamic extremists. Now, there was a pretty good chance for this film to be the comedy misfire of the century. A comedy film with this type of subject in the wrong hands would be utterly disastrous for everyone involved. Thankfully, Chris Morris is that special kind of genius who can pull this kind of thing off. Morris, who is a frequent colaberator of my favorite satirist Armando Iannucci, does an amazing job here. Not only does he not manage to offend anyone (well most people), but he actually manages to craft surprisingly funny film. The actors are top notch, with Nigel Lindsay being the standout as an anger prone jihadi with a penchant for swallowing things...like SIM cards. The film, along with the whip smart humor, slows down near the end...but that's to be expect given how the film ends. It's not perfect, but Four Lions manages to find humor in a deeply controversial subject.

Title: Le Cercle Rouge

Director: Jean-Pierre Melville

Plot: A recently released convict and a recently escaped prisoner attempt to pull off a massive diamond heist...while both a local crime boss and the police try to track them down.

Review: People think that Tarantino's characters are cool, but they can't even hold a flame to Melville's creations. His characters have a certain understanding of he world in which they occupy and glide though them with ease, leaving a trail of cigarette smoke and dead bodies in their wake. It is that reason that makes Melville's films so compelling...well that and his actual film making, which is superb. The only issue for most people is that Melville's films move really really really really really slow. His pacing is deliberate and he gives he scenes time to play out, but if you are not used to this style of film making then you're likely going to be bored out of your mind. If you're into cool noir characters and long and detailed heist scenes, a la Rififi, then this film is for you. Everyone one else, proceed with caution. For me though, I love this kind of film.

Yay, another movie to add to the growing list of films I've reviewed titled Leviathan:

Ruairi Robinson‘s proof of concept trailer for The Leviathan became an overnight sensation when it hit Vimeo and YouTube last week, and Hollywood has taken notice. A feature film is now in the works with two men who know a thing or two about bringing vast sci-fi universes to life: Simon Kinberg (X-Men) and Neill Blomkamp (Chappie). More on The Leviathan movie after the jump.

Deadline reports Kinberg beat out several big-name producers to clinch the deal. He will produce and Blomkamp will executive produce. Kinberg’s first-look deal with Fox means there’s a good chance The Leviathan will end up there. Even if Fox passes, though, the buzz surrounding the project should help it secure a deal elsewhere.

It’s not tough to see why Kinberg and Blomkamp were taken with The Leviathan. The gritty feel and vast scale of The Leviathan proof-of-concept trailer seem to be right up their alley. Inspired in part by Moby Dick, with shades of Dune, the synopsis for The Leviathan reads as follows:

By the early 22nd century mankind had colonized many worlds. Faster than light travel was made possible by harvesting exotic matter from the eggs of the largest species mankind has ever seen. Those that take part in the hunt are mostly involuntary labor.

Robinson previously directed the short films Blinky and The Silent City, as well as the feature film The Last Days on Mars. He was at one point attached to direct the live-action Akira remake. (Needless to say those plans didn’t work out, but you can check out the storyboards from back then if you’re curious about what his vision might have been.)

Kinberg has been with Fox’s X-Men franchise since 2006’s The Last Stand, and is also producing Deadpool and Fantastic Four for the studio. He’s also tied up with Disney’s Star Wars franchise, as a co-creator and executive producer of Star Wars Rebels and the writer of one of the upcoming standalone films. In addition, he produced Blomkamp’s Chappie and has Ridley Scott’s The Martian coming out soon.

Blomkamp is coming off of the aforementioned Chappie and is now working on the next Alien movie. Chappie wasn’t really a win for him, in my humble opinion, but he does have a clear love of sci-fi worldbuilding. As long as he steers clear of screenwriting duties on The Leviathan, his involvement is a good thing.

How about fast and furious: Tokyo Drift car driver. That was one of the best of the series.
Edit: Do you think your going to see furious 7 when it comes out?

Title: Mysterious Skin
Year: 2004

Director: Gregg Araki

Plot: A gay hustler and a UFO conspiracy theorist's lives are about to intertwine as they explore an event that happened in their childhood.

Review: Mysterious Skin is a well made and honest film about the long term effect of sexual abuse on the lives of two young men. It's a relatively difficult subject to tackle and the film pulls it off quite well. Joseph Gordon-Levitt does a fantastic job as well as Brady Corbet, who both play deeply damaged characters. This is an all around solid drama and is well worth your time.

I honestly only seen the first one and half of the 6th...or 5th. The F&F series really isn't my bag.

Title: The Mating Habits of the Earthbound Human

Plot: ♪Ha-Ha! Well now, we call this the act of mating, but there are several other very important differences between human beings and animals that you should know about♪

Review: This movie is essentially a five minute SNL sketch dragged out to a feature length film. Like not even a good SNL sketch either, like something that would show up after Weekend Update when most people have already turned off their TVs. The basic plot of the film is that this is a nature documentary about the process of human mating. Now I don't like to use the word cringe...but oh dear god, this is a cringe worth movie. Looking at IMDB and Rottentomatoes, there are some people who like this sort of thing...I am not one of those people. So if this is like some old time favorite of yours, just ignore me....for anyone else...it's not worth it.

Title: Mr. Death: The Rise and Fall of Fred A. Leuchter, Jr.

Director: Errol Morris

Plot: The story of a man who blunders into the field of constructing and maintaining execution devices...and who later blunders into the field of Holocaust denial.

Review: Remember kids, you can do anything you put your mind to. The the case of Fred Leuchter, he started a business maintaining and constructing execution devices to prisons in the United States...even though he is not an engineer. Apparently he got to the point where he could actually blackmail prisons into giving him contracts on the threat that he would testify on the behalf of death-row inmates. He had a pretty sweet scheme going until he was contacted by the defense team of a Holocaust denier who was being brought up on charges in Canada. Leuchter was hired by this guys defense team to go to Auschwitz and try to disprove the Holocaust...without even knowing the post-war history of the camp.

Needless to say, this is a pretty interesting documentary about a man out of his depth. Morris know how to construct an engaging documentary and is probably one of the foremost documentarians working today. Mr. Death is a fascinating study and if anything I have written so far has piqued your interest, you should probably check it out.

Oh god, I forgot that they did two sequels. I have people coming over now...so I'll get a review of the original up either later today or tomorrow or sometime in the immediate future.

I find the original as one of my favorite movies, but not a fan of the remake and its sequels. However, if you like action movies with little meaningful plot and large fight scenes then you may find the newer ones more enjoyable than I did.

Exactly!! But you gotta admit, in the remake the dreadnought scene is soooooo nice.
 
Hey Sexy, I noticed that you havent reviewed The Great Raid. Its about the greatest rescue in us military history during WWII. I remember seeing some of it, but dont mind watching it again.

Title: Death Race 2000
Year: 1975

Director: Paul Bartel

Plot: In the near future of the 1980s the United States government as we know it has ceased to exist. In its place an ultra-conservative dictator has taken over the country. In order to quell unrest and keep the masses entertained, the powers at be created an annual transcontinental road race. In this race though, it doesn't matter if you get to the finish line first in as much as it is important to accumulate points by killing as many civilians and bystanders as you can.

Review: Today, Death Race 2000 looks to have been he inspiration for whole swath of movies and video games. In essence it's a satire on America's obsession with sports, violence, and misplaced hero worship. It is also a 'B' movie through and through...so it's kind of cheap looking, a little long in places, and is dated all to hell. Still, it's an entertaining film with some half decent performances from David Carradine and even a pre-Rocky Sylvester Stallone. This isn't the best film, but if you have an appreciation for 'B' cinema and cheese then this film is worth checking out.

Plot: Let's talk about Scientology.

Review: Scientology has been a pretty easy target for a while now. There have been dozens of pieces done on the Church's practices and alleged abuses. Gibney though, has created a near comprehensive and incredibly well produced documentary on both the history of the Church and some of its abuses. If you've never really dug into Scientology, this is an excellent place to start. Now, the Church itself has come out against the film, stating that it is biased and wholly untrue. So...I can't really stand come out and say that this film is 100% true or not. Though given Gibney's track record, I'm going to give him the benefit of the doubt and even if only 50% of it is true...then this documentary is pretty damning. Only issue that I have with the film is that it's a smidgen too long. So check it out, it's currently on HBO and HBOGO.

Thanks for the review. I'll check it out. Saw an interview on CNN with Gibney(from what I recall) and he had some disturbing statements about Scientology-from their cult(religion) to the aftermath- from being sued, followed and so on. Cant wait to see it
