Title: The Untouchables

Director: Brian De Palma

Story: Prohibition officer Eliot Ness battles Al Capone Prohibition era Chicago.

Review: This is a breezy and thoroughly entertaining police actioneer from De Palma. The film centers on Eliot Ness and his ever escalating war against Robert De Niro's hooch empire. It's violent, well shot, and for the most part well acted...pretty much everything you could hope for from a De Palma film. The film is a little cheezy and plays a little too loose with with its history, but all in all this is an iconic benchmark that is worth your time.

Story: Holmes takes on his greatest challenge yet; hunting down a T-Rex, sea monster, fire breathing dragon...oh, and Steampunk Iron Man.

Review: This is an Asylum film and it's the second one that I've done. As I think I might have explained in my Transmorphers review; the Asylum is a studio known for making Mockbusters.

So this on was obviously made to piggy back off of Richie's film. Here is the thing though...this is actually more entertaining than Richie's film. I kid you not, I had more fun with this film than I had with the bum numbing Hollywood film. Sure this isn't that great of a film, but the sheer madness and stupidity that happens in this film launches it into a realm of entertainment that is rarely seen.

How about Red Dawn (1984) with Patrick Swayze.

Story: In a prohibition era city somewhere in America, an Irish Political boss is starting to lose control and the whole city is starting to dive into violence.

Review: Yeah, the synopsis above is pretty inaccurate, but for me to accurately summarize the film...I'd be here all day. Anyway this is a pretty good riff of Dashiell Hammett classic novel Red Harvest. The Coen Brothers manage to paint a colorful yet violent version on 1930's prohibition gangland. It's well acted and spectacularly directed. Probably the best out of the pre-Fargo Coen films.

Title: Barton Fink

Director: Coen Brothers

Story: Fink is a 1940's playwright who hits it big on Broadway and goes to Hollywood to make it big in the pictures. Fink arrives in Hollywood to a bad case of writers block and soon his whole world beings to spin out of control.

Review: It's basically the Coen brothers do David Lynch...though apparently they weren't inspired by Lynch at all when making this film. Anyway, this is by far and away the Coen's weirdest film and their most symbolic. That and it's ambiguous ending allows for a great many interpretations of the films plot. It's a great film none the less and one that is fun to figure out.

Story: Mel Gibson kills English people...lots and lots of English people.

Review: Historically inaccurate but very entertaining, Emmerich's Revolutionary war epic is a little hit or miss. The movie has a propensity to get sappy...really really sappy. Also the British are unfairly vilified in this film, sort of making some of them look like blood thirsty sociopaths. Despite all that though, it's a fun movie and a perfect vehicle for Gibson.

Story: WOLVERINES!!!!!!

Review: Violent, campy and a little stupid, Red Dawn is an incredibly iconic film. Sure, it unfairly paints the Russian's as blood thirsty sociopaths...like the British in The Patriot...but in this movie it really doesn't matter. Sit back, shut off your brain, and enjoy.
