Title: The Rum Diary

Story: This is a tale of Alcohol, Cock fighting, and land development schemes.

Review: This one is based on a novel written by Hunter S. Thompson in the early 60s.This novel was written prior to his Gonzo years, which started in 1970. So if you're going into this film thinking that it's about Thompson and drugs...well you're going to be a little disappoint. Or to put it a little more bluntly, this is not Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas.

Now that's not to say this film is entirely without Thompson's personality. After all it's based on a book written by him. The story is overall pretty low key, with not much happening during it's running time. It's the kind of story that seems to be grounded in reality, despite some of the films more fantastical elements. The acting is pretty good. Depp plays the character as a very low key Thompson, and overall does a decent enough job with the role. The supporting cast is pretty good, though Giovanni Ribisi plays this really annoying comic relief character.

The main issue with the film lies in the pacing department. The film is overall poorly paced, with some part seemingly dragging on to eternity. It's the kind of film that makes its two hour run time feel the three. Despite that, the director does a competent enough job with the film. What really gets me though is how conventional this film is in both a film making sense and in a story sense. Sure, as I said before this is before Gonzo Thompson...but it would have been to the film's benefit if it had been a little weirder. What we have here is a conventional and somewhat mediocre adaptation of a novel by Hunter S. Thompson.

Story: The tale of two men and their journey to find a White Castle.

Review: Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle is equal parts Road Movie, Buddy Comedy, and Stoner Comedy. This perfect combination help to create on of the most memorable comedy in recent memory. The plot is pretty simple, two stoners go out looking for White Castle and along the way weird and funny things happen to them. There isn't much to say about this one, but I can say that it's better than many other stoner comedies out there. So, yeah...go watch it.

A lot of my friends have said the same. One even made a blog for me in the hopes that I'd start, but I've never gotten around to it.

Title: Trading Places

Director: John Landis

Story: On a bet, two wealthy brothers destroy the life of one of their high ranking employees. At the same time they bring in a poor con man to replace him.

Review: The 80s were great for John Landis, with maybe the exception of Spies Like Us, The Three Amigos and Into the Night, he cranked out classic after classic. Trading Places is no exception. The film takes on several underlying themes of Nurture Vs. Nature, disparity of wealth, and corporate greed with all the fineness and humor that one would expect from a Landis production.

Everyone one is great in the film and it's overall well directed. Frankly if you haven't seen this one yet, then you're missing out. This is a comedy classic and it's one that is well worth your time.

Brief Update​

I'm on my final two or three weeks of classes. For the last month I've been cranking out paper after paper and I'm finally close to the end. So anyway, there won't be many reviews for the next two or three weeks. After that, I'll try to put up a whole bunch of reviews.
