Story: It's official, I'm never going to Belgium.

Review: When an entertainers van breaks down in the middle of no where, he is offered help by the owner of the local inn...he should have turned it down. This isn't at all what I expected, I thought this was going to be another in a long string of terrible torture porn films that people recommended to me. What I got instead was an unsettling psychological horror; the plot of which would be difficult to summaries in just a few sentences. If you're game for a really weird and unsettling horror film, then this might be for you.

Story: Immersion destroyed on scene at a time.

Review: The story is really mediocre, something about wide spread alien abductions and hypnotherapy releasing repressed memories.

What kills the film though is the way the story is told. In an attempt to make this seem real, they filmmakers present the film in a pseudo-documentary style. This includes supposed "real" footage played at the same time as the "reenactments". Other times the scenes are inter-spliced with the two types of footage. You can tell that the director really wanted to experiment with the way the film was shot. The issue is...it completely destroys immersion of the film. From start to finish it's like this and it's just the filmmakers shooting themselves in the foot. It turns what could have simple been a mediocre film and makes it terrible.

Story: Wily gambler embarks on a crazy journey to make it to a large poker game.

Review: This is one of the movies that I grew up with and I still love it. The films strength is its ability to switch from action to humor successfully in a second or two. The performances are all great, with Gibson doing a perfect job with the character. All around very satisfying film experience.

Story: The Times They Are a-Changin'

Review: I sort of wanted to see the directors cut before I reviewed this...but whatever. Here is the bad news, I'm a big fan of the Comic book/Graphic Novel and as such...it's kind of hard to judge this film objectively.

So anyway, the basic story is that from the 1930s-1980s costumed vigilantes roamed the streets of America enforcing the law Batman style. In the 80s this style of justice was outlawed. Most of the costumed vigilantes either retired or went to work for the government, except for one named Rorschach. When one of the ones who was working for the government is killed, Rorschach comes into investigate only to discover a greater conspiracy.

The film is well done, but has its fair share of flaws. There is several cases of miscasting and some really poor choices in the soundtrack department. Though when you take it all in...it's kind of obvious that this was probably the best adaption of Watchmen that we we're going to get. In hindsight, I have to agree with Moore. Watchmen probably shouldn't have been adapted, to much was cut from the source material and it hurts the impact of the story. If you've never experience Watchmen, then skip the film and go read the book.

I own the directors cut, there are some nice scenes, some of the stuff from the book and it does put a bit more context, easily the best scene cut was
Night Owl I's Death Scene
which I believe is on youtube.

I believe both the movie and the book have their place, while the book makes you think a bit more Watchmen in movie form can stand on its own. I would just recommend reading the book first then seeing the movie.

Side note: Which songs didn't you like for the soundtrack? Just curious.

Night Owl I's Death Scene
, it really would have helped the film.

The book give a complete view on the characters, which in my opinion was kind of the purpose of telling the story. The film does an admirable job, but can't quite hit all the character. As a result, I felt that Silk Spectre II and Nite Owl II were never really fleshed out.

On the soundtrack...I had an issue with Along the Watchtower, Hallelujah and 99 Luftballons. Sounds of Silence was also poorly used. The best was The Times They Are a-Changin' and the Philip Glass.

Also the ending felt a bit neutered in comparison to the original.

Agreed on the fleshing out of characters.

On the music, Agree with Hallelujah, I felt Along the Watchtower fit really well since it was even referenced in that part of the book, and 99 luftballons was on there for a very small part so I am sorta indifferent to it. Sounds of Silence, I love Simon and Garfunkle so can't really be unbiased there. Agreed on The Times They Are a-Changin' though, that was a great opening sequence.

I was wondering because one of the things that stuck with my friends most when we came out of the theater was the musical choices.

On why they cut it? No idea, but it along with the follow up of
Night Owl II almost killing the knothead in the bar
wouldn't have added much time to the movie, they really should have put it in.

Story: A story about desperation and greed.

Review: A young man inadvertently get involved in a game of death which pits him against 13 other man. The films is well shot in striking black and white imagery. Definitely worth watching.

Hmm...forgot that Along the Watchtowers was in that scene.

Yeah, that scene definitely wouldn't have added all that much time to the film...but it would have added some really heavy emotional weight to the story.

Yeah and even though it was late in the film it would have helped flesh out Night Owl II a bit more.

Story: Everything the Star Wars prequels should have been.

Review: Serenity was the enjoyable Sci-Fi to come out last decade...yeah, that's not an overstatement. I seriously can't think of any other that I had more fun watching. Based on the canceled Fox TV show Firefly, we follow the exploits of a lovable group of robber and mercenaries...think Han Solo. This group get into some serious trouble, not going to explain it, with a galactic government type of organization. The film is funny, sad, action packed...etc. Just watch it.

Director: Chan-wook Park

Story: There was an indecent in the DMZ.

Review: Park is a really talented filmmaker and we will get to see how great he is when we see his later films. Unfortunately JSA, while financially successful, is not that great of a movie. The film tries to paint a high tension situation between North and South Korea that is seriousness enough that it might spark off a war...but it isn't successful in that regard. Instead we get an unfocused meandering film that didn't keep my interest.

Story: A film about a dysfunctional family.

Review: A well rounded drama about Kym, played by Anne Hathaway, the sister of Rachel. Kym is kind of the black sheep of the family and...well she just got out of rehab so she could attend her sister's wedding. This is a character driven film and because of that there isn't all that much action happening. Despite that, it's a really interesting and film, with a great performance from Hathaway. Definitely worth watching.

Story: Come on! Toilets are always funny!

Review: I don't know how to review this...It could either be one of the greatest misfires in comic book movie history. Or it could be one of the best comedies I've ever seen. Here's the problem, there is no way that someone could write a script as bad as The Spirit's without knowing that it was that bad...and considering that Miller wrote it, I can only guess that it's a comedy...but its not billed as one. So I'm going to give two ratings for this one.

Action/Drama [3/10]
Comedy [8.5/10]
