Title: Key Largo
Year: 1948
Country of Origin: US
Director: John Huston

Plot: An ex-military officer makes his way down to Key Largo to visit a hotel run the family of a fallen comrade. When he arrives he is greeted with an air of tense hostility and reports of an oncoming hurricane.

Review: Key Largo is a tension filled drama about a group of people being terrorized by a mob boss attempting to return from his Cuban exile. It features solid performances from its excellent cast. Claire Trevor gives a stand out performance as an aging singer whose in the throws of alcoholism. It's a little long winded in places, but still an effect piece of noir cinema. If you're into film noir or interested in the works of John Huston then this should be an easy recommendation. For everyone else, this is a classic and you should check it out.

Mad Max 2015 was a great movie ! I'd buy it if i had the money. It also had few funny moments. Great soundtrack too !

Insidious Chapter 3 was a great movie and im usually not a big fan of horror movies. In my opinion the 1st scare and the ending were the best scenes of the movie(however religious people may not like the ending to much)

Furious 7 was fantastic movie, Full of awesome car stunts and even a cat fight ! The movie also had a very nice tribute to Paul Walker at the end.

I'm not interested in seeing The Visit movie as elderly people acting odd isn't very surprising

Grampus is a horror movie coming out around the holidays, It looks like it may have it's moments but who wants to see a scary movie in private around a time of joy and peace.

Title: The Burning
Year: 1981

Plot: Five years after a prank gone wrong left a camp grounds keeper burned beyond recognition, he returns looking for vengeance.

Review: The Burning is a dated, but none-the-less solid slasher film about a group of teens who are terrorized by a garden shears wielding maniac. The acting is about where you would expect it to be and the gore is pretty decent. The film is paced well and goes by relatively quickly. It does suffer from the same issue that most older horror movies have...in that it is particularly scary for modern audiences. This film though did touch off a couple of careers. It was the debut of Seinfeld's Jason Alexander and also Holly Hunter's debut. On top of that it was also the first film project of the Weinstein brothers who went on to found Miramax and Dimension Films. So from a historical standpoint this film is interesting. If you're a fan of slasher films then you should check this one out. If you're not really a fan of the horror genre though you might not get all that much out of this one.

Title: The Duke of Burgundy

Plot: Cynthia and Evelyn have a peculiar relationship.

Review: I saw this one about a month ago and I honestly still have no idea what to think of this movie. It is about the odd dynamics of a relationship between two women...and no I'm not saying that it's odd because the are simply sexual partners. There is an element of BDSM here and the film explores both the power dynamic between these two women and the emotional toll that it takes. More importantly it takes a measured and understanding view of this relationship and steers far away from condemning these characters.

The film is beautifully shot, but also Peter Strickland takes every opportunity to weird things up. There is some particularly striking imagery here and not the type that you would expect from a romantic drama. I don't know whether Strickland's odd asides help the film in anyway, but they are interesting to watch when they happen. The acting is solid, the two leads have enough heft to carry the whole film, which is impressive since pulling off these roles require some serious craft. Still, despite all the great things I just said, I really felt the films runtime. It feels longer than it should, and that is a major issue. Strickland is an up and coming filmmaker and this is his second film to have drawn my attention...the first being the yet to be reviewed Berberian Sound Studio. So if you're like me and tries to stay on top of what's happening in the world of cinema, give this a shot.

Title: God Told Me To
Year: 1976

Director: Larry Cohen

Plot: New York is under siege by a series of mass killings. The only common thread between them: the killer claims that god told them to do it.

Review: This film starts off as a run of the mill police procedural about a hard nose religious detective who is trying to find a common thread between a series of mass shootings. Then around the half way point the film shifts gears and flings itself out into left field. Like the closest comparison that I can think of for the end of this film's plot is the anime Trigun...which was a little surprising for me considering the way the film began. It's this shift which will probably lose more than a few viewers along the way. Overall though it's alright, I kind of wish that it went a little further out into left field...but you can't criticize a film based on what you wish it could be. So if I piqued you're interest by bringing up Trigun then give this one a watch and probably be a bit disappointed.

So update time:

Were getting close to Halloween and unlike previous years I'm gearing up for it by watching cult horror films from the 70s and 80s. So get pumped for those reviews. Also, if you have any horror recommendations from that era, please send them my way

On the podcast thing, we recorded an episode. Unfortunately we were also drinking so it was kind of garbage. Now that we have sort of an idea what we're doing we'll be recording more episodes in the coming weeks. If any of them turn out good, I'll post them here. I'm positive about it because we actually sat down and talked into a microphone for an hour...which beats our previous attempts where we talked about it and then promptly did nothing.

One of these day I'll have to watch the Insidious movies. I'm not a big fan of modern marquee horror films, but apparently the Insidious movies are...good? So I'll have to see them eventually.

As far as Krampus goes, I don't even begin to know what to think. I'm probably confused because I watched a lot of Parks and Rec and seeing Adam Scott in a horror movie is just messing with my brain.

The 80s Evil Dead 1 movie was great, It has some pretty good horror scenes and a few gross scenes too. I havent seen Evil Dead 2 yet but i saw a few scenes from it on youtube and it looks pretty good. A guy on youtube also uses the TF2 scout to make fun of 1 of the movie scenes( I think it was source movie make ? im not sure)

Also see the new one from a few years ago if your interested in those movies.

I'm pretty big fan of the Evil Dead series and reviewed them a few years back. Definitely check out Evil Dead 2, it's tonally a very different movie than the first. Where the first one is a straight up horror movie the second one is a borderline slapstick comedy.

Plot: A young man slowly begins to realize that there might be something horribly wrong with his upper class family.

Review: This movie is dumb. The basic setup is a Beverly Hills teen begins to notice odd things about his family as well as the rest of Beverly Hills' upper class community. As he begins to investigate he starts to run in to what appears to be a cover up. Evidence is changed, people who had helped him start to turn up dead. All of this leads up to a gooey and body horror laden conclusion that is less horror and more broad satire. The thing that kills the movie though is that the satire is so on the nose that it completely loses its potency. The acting is alright, the direction is decent enough, and the practical effects waiver between great and mediocre. I got nothing out of this one, it's not scary or creepy or even funny...it's just oppressively silly.

Director: The Soska Sisters

Review: A young woman gets into the business of body modification surgery.

Plot: American Mary is almost a great movie. It starts off decent enough, med school student hard up for money winds up taking a few peculiar gigs to make some cash. Then the film pivots into a rape revenge film and pivots again into a film about her life as a well respected underground surgeon. The film portrays each step as a logical move for our protagonist to take and even though she might take things way way too far you can't help but root for her a bit. Katharine Isabelle does a pretty good job as the understated Mary. In fact understated is a great way to describe this film, it's not an all out gore fest. Actually there is very little gore and a lot of the violence and graphic surgery happens off camera. The major issue is that the ending is complete and utter garbage. It comes out of no where and pretty much feels like the filmmakers simply didn't know how tie the film up. It's unfortunate because I was really enjoying the film up until the end. The Soska sisters did a great job here, but dear god they need to work on their endings.

Plot: After his wife unexpectedly asks for a divorce things start to spiral down hill for Mark.

Review: *Ding ding ding* We have a winner here folks. Possession is a film that manages to merge family drama, psychological thriller, and horror into one massively insane package. Like I honestly don't know where to begin here. I guess we should start with the performances of our two leads. Isabelle Adjani goes balls to the wall in her performance...and I don't really like to use 'balls to the wall' in a review or any type of quasi-academic setting, but here it's actually appropriate. Like I really hadn't come across her prior to this film, but she got attention now. Her role here is nothing short of amazing, she goes all in and I mean all in since here character goes through several painful looking spasms and seizures. Her co-star Sam 'Jurassic Park' Neill also knocks it out of the park as a man whose life is being torn to pieces for reasons that are beyond him. He is brought to the edge of madness and Neill is more than game enough to portray Mark's decline.

This film is definitely not for all tastes, it's really weird, very violence, and decidedly European in it's sensibilities. The ending is my only real hang up of the film, it's very opaque and might have something to do with the Cold War??? I honestly don't know, but I still want to see it again. So if you're like me and love seeing something crazy original, check this film out.

I'm pretty spotty on the sequels. I've seen most of Jaws 3, but that's about it. I guess I'll need to get around to seeing them.

Title: Gorky Park
Year: 1983

Director: Michael Apted

Plot: After three mutilated bodies show up in Gorky Park, a Moscow instigator gets caught up in a massive conspiracy involving sables.

Review: One of the main questions that I had for a good portion of this film's running time is: why Russia? The plot itself could have easily been regeared for an American setting and it would have helped with the whole accent issue. Where there are Russian characters played by people speaking in English accents and American characters played with American accents. It's odd, but as the plot unfolds the setting begins to make more sense.

Anyway, this is a pretty decent political thriller that pits our protagonist against the higher echelon of Russian society. The acting is alright, William Hurt is not all that convincing as a Russian, but he still does his role well. Lee Marvin plays Lee Marvin well, though here he is pretty menacing. This is an entertaining, but pretty middle of the road thriller. Other films have done similar subjects better, but this is still somewhat worth watching. Especially the end, it has a pretty solid ending.
