So my computers getting around the year and a half mark, and was wondering if I should get the new ATI Radeon 5970 that'll be coming out in June, correct me if I'm wrong. I do imagine that it would be expensive as well as my dad MIGHT be able to get me a 5870 or 5850 for free, and that's a small chance, or he might be able to get me anything in the 5000 series, my question would be to you guys out there, which would you pick and why?

And if I end up getting a 5000 series, I'll upgrade to windows 7 instead of vista 32 bit, just because it'll be easier for me, and he can get it for free. :D

My current is a 4800.

my suggestion is to keep w/ the 4800. in my mind theres not that big of a difference between the 4800 & the 5xxx series, but then again i may be wrong (someone feel free to correct me since im not an amd/ati fanboy here). i really dont forsee the jump from the 4xxx to the 5xxx series (esp the higher series) being that big of a boost in graphics. now os wise, thats a different story. i would love to upgrade to some nvidia card in the 2xx series (possibly 280 or something close that) but isnt a big priority on my list. now if i can be suggested of a card better than the 280 for around the same price, then ill look into it, but like i said, not a big priority.

Would there a big a good HD monitor out there that's pretty big, but a good size, and is relatively cheap, it doesn't matter, but not talking 500 dollars.

I have a 5850 From Sapphire and from a 4870 by XFX there is a big difference in performance. I can fully max out (full AA) BC2 @ 1920 x 1200 with 75+ FPS. Plus the heat given off is a lot less when idling.

It thinks CSS is idling @_@ ... so it stays usually around 37 - 43C idling and under load I think like 60C @ 35% or 30% fan speed at all times.

So compared to a 48XX series a 58XX series card is a lot better. So if anything go for a 5850 and OC to a 5870s speeds and bam your card will handle everything.

You said year and a half, AND counting. What are you running right now? If you can get the 5870-5850 for free, go for it. Next to that, if you're running anything else besides a high-end Quad (i7, 965/955Phenom or the i5750) you'll just end up bottle necking everything.

i say just go for the 5870/5850 if you can get it for free. then sell it and add only a couple of hundred dollars and get the 5970 XD XD XD

but yea, its not all about the gpu. a 5850 is already amazing. and also, i do believe 5970 is already been out. for some time now.

Well right now I got an AMD Athlon 64 x2 Dual Core Processor 5200+ 2.70 GHz

I don't know anything about processors, so tell me if I'm going anywhere? :P

Erm, what's OC?

Okay, don't get a new GPU. It would be extremely bottlenecked.
And OC is overclock.

Should I get a new processor?

Well, I assume you have an older motherboard + ram, as well.
So if you did, you'd have to do a whole update to your system.
And yes, a 5770 should be the max you should get, unless you upgrade the rest of your core specs (motherboard, cpu, ram)

YES there is a difference between the 4000 and 5000 series. Besides DX11 and all, compare the 4000 series and 5000 series by the number of stream processing units. A 5870 for example has as many SP's as the 4870x2 at 1600. The 5770 has the same SP's as the 4870, you could start with that . Myself, free or not would go for at least a 5850.

If you have the money, the 5970 is worth it.

EDIT: your CPU will be a MAJOR bottleneck for any 58/9xx card

Major is a understatement.
Upgrade to a Quad or a higher end dual (i3/i5) or the newer x2's from AMD. Those will happily compliment whatever your current 4xxx card is now. (probably)

I would get the Radeon 5450 since its $65 (USA). I am poor :( I currently have a Nvidia Geforce GE 9200 which is pretty bad. But if you can afford 160 bucks then get the 5770.

I have 4gb of ram, and I'll probably get a new CPU, GPU, and Motherboard, and end up upgrading to a 5770.

If you have a socket775 motherboard, I can sell you a q8300 quad core for 90$. With the 5xxx series cards from ATI, you get DX11, 3D, and Eyefinity. So yes, get a 5xxx series card. I personally think you should get a 5970, you'll be set for the next 4 years pretty much graphics wise.

He's already said that he has an old AMD Athlon X2 processor.

Please do not try and sell things on this part of the forums. Thanks.
