the link does work thank you. i know im being picky, but it is not the most aesthetically pleasing and is a little more expensive than laptop i saw from ibuypower. however, it does come with some nice little gadgets and any issues may be a bit easier to handle. thanks for you help though.
 
It is much more powerful than any of the IBPs in that price range.

that model he has is in the same chassis, but has slightly different components
 
oh wow. thank you very much for that. of course the first thing they are saying is the weight, and that could run to be an issue if im lugging it around a campus. but thank you so much for your help.
 
I'm a laptop gamer myself and I have to say the suggestions your getting are good. I'm using an aspire laptop I bought from Newegg.com a few years ago and still running good. Good enough to play TF2 and L4D on medium settings.

There are four things you have to accept when gaming with a laptop that I have learned.

1. Lack of support for graphics cards relating to laptops.
2. Heat and ventilation issues (Laptop fans are poor quality and unreliable).
3. There is no way around the weight and crappy battery life. (outlet required)
4. Upgrading is too expensive to consider.

However, I found hope in updating my graphics card drivers at these sites:

Also a thing about gaming laptops and college. Especially alienware laptops... they are a big NO. I wouldn't dare take one to college where things "disappear". They are ridiculously overpriced and all their fancy logo affords you is a bad impression with your college professor and your fellow peers. That logo is not very subtle.

From my experience, a desktop and a mini-laptop is ideally better. You'll hardly have time gaming on the go and having a desktop frees you of all the problems I listed above. You can get a small laptop for $350 and a budget gaming desktop for $800.

wow, alright, thanks. i do want a gaming laptop, partly, for gaming, but also because i dont want the thing to be very outdated in two years and runs slowly. i have to put up with that now (why i havent played on a ego server for about a year or so), and so i want a laptop that can last, and a gaming laptop seems to be more high end. as for a desktop, thats not going to be very good, because thats going to be one more thing im going to have to worry about when coming home (im going pretty far). as for the laptop disappearing, i would try my best to keep it locked up, but thanks for the heads up and your help.

Reflex has about the best possible choice you can make for the money. Best Buy occasionally puts out some great deals, so don't neglect to see what they have to offer once in a while.

You do also have the option of browsing on eBay. Take a look for new laptops from dealers with high approval ratings. You may be able to find a few hidden gems on there, or find some slightly modded laptops as well that may work for you.
 
Its pretty much impossible to find a computer that can last more than 2 years before getting outdated, its even harder to find a laptop like that. New hardware comes out ever few months, expect to find your laptop no long top of the line within a few months.
 
im not sure if anyone is still worrying about this, but i ended up getting a dell studio 15 with a ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5470, 1GB and Intel Core i5-520M 2.40GHz (2.93Ghz Turbo Mode, 3M cache), and a 500 gb hard drive. i wanted to thank you for all your help and just you in on everything and i hope to be gaming with you all very shortly.
