Road trip map (if you think I was gonna put the starting/ending point where either Ides or I actually live, you're crazy. Haha. I put it, instead, at a major intersection in our hometown's downtown) Follow along as you read.
Noon
I head over to Ides' place to pick him up. I get there and we hang out for a while before leaving. Ides offers me a cookie from these strange chocolate chip cookies he bought and then we go get in the truck. I put the cookie in my mouth while I put my seatbelt on and start the truck, and I mumble (cookie in mouth) to Ides, "Wnbt mm tuh mt tha cnsul uhnm so yr fnt ans fnts br-rr?" (translation: "want me to put the console up so your fat [butt] fits better?") He responds, without skipping a beat, with, "Oh, you're going to talk about my fat (butt) when I could barely understand you with a cookie shoved in your mouth? Me: "Tnchay" (translation: "Touche").
Ah, we're off to a good start...
12:30
We're on the road for maybe a minute when the Explorer in front of us stops for the passenger, who appeared to open the door and throw up. We were a few blocks back, so it was hard to quite tell, haha. We continued onto the freeway and heading South.
1:03
We're well on our way South and we decide we want Ezell's Fried Chicken for lunch. Ides has never had it and it's awesome.
Little-known fact: Ezell's is Oprah's (yes, THAT Oprah....how many Oprahs do you know???) favorite chicken place.
I don't know where the Seattle or Renton locations are, but I know where the Lynnwood one is, so we get off the freeway and backtrack up to Ezell's. On the way back North, we see this woman at a bus stop who is trying to hitchhike a ride with somebody. She is doing this little dance where she holds her thumb out, puts her other hand on her stomach like she's sick, and shakes back and forth, clearly on drugs and completely oblivious to how ridiculous she looks.
Continuing up through Lynnwood, we feel like we've suddenly arrived in Asia. Every sign is in Korean or Chinese, even though no Asians are to be seen...Strange...
1:22
We arrive at Ezell's and order like $20 worth of chicken (oh yeah, we were hungry, haha).
1:31
We get our chicken and go drop the truck's tailgate to eat out there (there are no tables at Ezell's--you eat in your car).
1:38
All of that chicken and sweet rolls is finished in seven minutes. Done. Not the tiniest scrap left to be seen anywhere. We hit the road again.
Coming through Shoreline, we discuss how epic it would be if there were war waged on our home soil in the US...all of the things that would be done or changed, how set we'd be with all of the Naval/Air Force/Army bases in our area, and what we'd do ourselves to defend our home.
1:52
We've just entered Seattle and traffic is not at a stand-still. I mean a dead stop. If you are from anywhere in the world except for Los Angeles (or, of course, Washington), you have no idea what the meaning of "bad traffic" is. On a freeway where the speed limit is 60mph, most people do over 70mph, but in Seattle we never went higher than 10mph (and only got close to that a few times) from Northgate to the bridge.
2:13
We're finally into downtown Seattle. Haha, look at that map, from Northgate to downtown and you'll see how impressive (in a negative way, though) that really is...
We continue on down, relatively uneventfully, to Sumner.
3:00
We arrive at Peking Garden in Sumner, where I agreed to meet up with our Head Coach to go over some game stuff. In reality, we pretty much just sat there watching him eat two giant plates of food, another plate of BBQ pork, and a cup of soup.
During our "meeting", one of the other coaches called to find out where we were and the Coach asked the waitress (who, herself, had just sat down to three massive plates of food) what the name of the place was.
"Peking aofjwoefw" (undecipherable), she said.
Coach: "Peking what?"
Her: "Peking pifjwpeijfw"
Coach: "Peking what? Peking dragon?"
Her: "Peking ohfpowquief"
Coach: "Peking...duck?"
Her: "Peking oiwqowie"
Coach: "Peking what? Peking orange?" "Hold on a second Vern, her French is horrible..."
*She then gets up, grabs a menu, and shows him the name*
Coach: "Ahhhh. Peking Garden."
We were laughing pretty well.
4:00
Finishing things up at the restaurant, we headed across the street to "Sunset Chevrolet Stadium" for the game. We went through all of the usual pregame stuff. Warm-ups, stretching, walk-throughs, pep talks, taping up body parts, etc.
6:00
Game starts.
6:30
My voice is pretty much already gone, from yelling at my players hahaha. Ides' voice will go soon after.
8:47
Game is over, we lost. 0-1 this season.
If you're a football fan and want more details, you'll have to ask me for them. Not gonna get into it here.
9:08
Finished saying what I need to say to the players and ready to go, we leave the stadium, heading back home. I decide to go I405 (the Seattle bypass) on the way back, but we decide on Dick's Drive In, in Seattle, for dinner. Following more than our fair share of "Dick's" jokes, I decide on taking I90 straight across the lake into downtown Seattle.
Little-known fact: If you were to leave the Qwest Field (Seattle Seahawks)/Safeco Field (Seattle Mariners) parking garage and head East on that road, it turns into I90. If you were to stay on I90 without exiting at all, all of the way to it's end, you'd go through over a dozen states and end up on a Navy base, just outside of Boston, Massachusetts. No joke.
9:34
Following more "Dick's" jokes (I guess we weren't quite finished), we're crossing the bridge across Lake Washington and all of a sudden there is this COMPLETELY dark boat (appeared to be a fishing trolley or dredger or something--not sure) sitting right next too, but a little off of, the bridge. It was very creepy and ominous-looking.
9:48
We pull into the Wallingford Dick's and expire the rest of my cash (they are cash-only...lame, huh?) on food, the football game having worked up quite the appetite in both of us.
Dying of thirst, we drive up a block to a Shell gas station to get some PowerAdes to drink.
10:07
We're back on the road, this time with "home" being the immediate destination. Coming up past the Alderwood Mall, it starts sprinkling (it had been pretty nice for most of the day). Ides says, "It's raining now?" No sooner had he said that when all of a sudden it was pouring. I mean I had the windshield wipers on full-tilt and it was still hard to see.
Upon entering Everett, the rain just....stops. Nothing.
10:43
Almost out of Everett (in the middle of three lanes), there is a van in the left-hand lane. It turns it's left turn signal on. We're like "Uhhh...where is he turning?" He then slices right in front of us and over to the right-hand lane. Ides was like, "Oh yeah, THAT made perfect sense." It was kinda funny.
As soon as we leave Everett, the rain starts again. We theorized that they either put a ban on rain, or paid off the "rain gods" cause it was pretty strange.
10:50
We're back to Marysville, at Ides' place. Naturally the first thing we do it hop on his computer and laptop to play some DoD:S.
11:45
A few victories later, it's about time for me to head home, as I am suddenly getting tired.
Day: Finally over.
Total tally:
12 hours.
150 miles.
1 football game.
Lots of food eaten.
Literally dozens of people Ides met for the first time.
More laughs than you could imagine (if you were with us your side would have been hurting most of the time).
Who wants in on the next one? lol
