John Allsopp is back with the results of the survey "State of Web Development" in a report for Web Directions and Scroll Magazine. It is the second place since his last in 2008, and shows the changes in practices and preferences of Web development with respect to the results this year.
The report is the product of a survey of more than 1200 professional web developers and designers that includes an analysis - more than 50 questions - covering technologies, techniques, philosophy and practices on the Web.
This survey was mostly answered by professionals in the United States, Australia, Canada and England, with interesting results:
* Few people use some version of Internet Explorer, but IE8 is the browser most used by developers for testing.
* Firefox (3.5 - 3.6) is the browser of choice for developers, while Chrome has been considerable growth to be located just behind Safari.
* More than half of respondents now use Mac OS X core operating system.
* Nearly one third of respondents using Mobile Safari, while the use of Android is 4%.
* Almost 80% use the JQuery library, frentre to 63% last year.
* Environments for developing web applications for the desktop as Cappuccino and SproutCore show little signs of adoption. Perhaps because these applications are coming or not really interested developers build Web applications that mimic the desktop.
When it comes to web development technologies, major stories are CSS3, HTML5 and Web fonts.
* Now developers start taking more CSS3 aa or experimental CSS properties (like CSS transitions and transformations, animations, shadows), unlike last year.
* In the last survey only 4% was linked to the use of fonts @ font-face, now is the 23%
* HTML5 is now used to some extent by around 30% of respondents, compared with less than 10% last survey.
