My rig consists of the following:

Intel Pentium 4 HT @ 3.00 GHz
Intel Entry Server Motherboard S875WP1-E
3 GB DDR400 RAM in Dual Channel Configuration
500 GB Western Digital Caviar Blue SATA HDD
512 MB PNY Verto Nvidia GeForce 7600 GS GPU
Linksys WMP54GS 802.11g NIC
Windows XP Home Edition (I have keys for Pro, idk why I haven't switched yet)

My question is this: Is my system good enough to play without excessive lag on your servers? I have a 15 Mbps down/10 Mbps up connection, but I'm not entirely sure. I only use wireless because to run a wire I'd have to take a chunk out of the ceiling in my basement bathroom, and my dad doesn't like that idea.

Your computer is definitely good to go.
I'd suggest either getting a new/better wireless card or run a cable.

Totally would, but our current router is a Linksys WRT54G and my mom is dead-set against buying a new router, so I can't go up to 802.11n. Also, read my first post. Running a wire would involve cutting a hole in the ceiling of the basement bathroom to get to the floor.
 
The only thing that could really use upgrading is the processor. If you have the extra cash to throw around, a new video card wouldn't hurt either, but that system should do pretty well. If you purchase a wireless n router and connect it through the lan port on your old router, do you think your parents would object. They would still have their crummy wireless g, and you would have your n for gaming!

Router - I'm neutral on the router, but I'd like to buy a 15U network rack, a couple switches, and a small server. But that has to wait until I get a job. Currently, I'm without a job and doing crappy in school, so the parents would object to anything that might help me play games :thumbdown:
 
That proccesor is going to kill you. Single core ftl. You can play, but at maybe ~15 fps in the eGO's 32 player servers. It won't be very fun, but it will run (not easily).

Tf2's updates has raised its system requirements substantially, a single core back then was the min for the game. The game was orginally made for 24 people, 32 people adds on a lot more cpu cycles and hurts your fps more. Systems this old just wont handle it anymore.

I'm running a dual-core ~2.5Ghz processor which means in basic comparison I'm running 5Ghz to your 3Ghz. And I have some issues while playing.

Also, ping can't directly create choppiness in game. A high ping only creates a delay between when the server sees something and when you see something. Choppiness is credited more to Choke (as far as an internet connection is concerned), which is basically information getting put in a queue waiting to go through your series of tubes. I would look at finding a way to improve your router situation. You could try just running a huge cable down the stairs through the door instead of cutting a hole in your roof. Or even relocating your gaming station.

You cant actually multiply the frequency by the number od physical cores, its just multiple cores at that frequency. Wish it worked like that though :p.

The way I understand multicore clock rates, it clocks them both using the same clock generator. Because of this, a 2.5 GHz dual core runs at the same clock rate as a single core, but can pump two parallel sets of numbers at once. Simultaneous Multi-Threading accomplishes this by duplicating certain areas of the CPU. It's not quite as fast as true dual core, but it allows quite a noticeable speed increase.

Speaking of code optimization, is Steam/Source optimized for IA-64?

Well, my comparison was a basic way of comparing the two. If you've got two lines crunching numbers at the same rate that another processor is crunching numbers in one line, you're end result is essentially twice as powerful. The clock rate is the same, but the actual generated processing power isn't.
 
Well, in HL2 with display quality as far up as I can set it, I still get a framerate of in between 50 and 70 fps.
 
That all looks good. The real question we all should be asking is what kind of mouse pad are you running?

That old Better Home and Garden magazine just might not cut it anymore.

Regardless of its relevance, I'm not using a mousepad, and I'm using a generic Logitech 3 button mouse because it's really all I can afford.
