Why do we need six core processors?!

For most applications, four is in fact too many! Gahhh i've been trying to wrap my head around this for hours. Two cores is nice, three is better, and four (for the most part) is useless. So why six?! :facewall::facewall::facewall:

Well think about it for a minute. Wouldn't you like your PC to load programs in less time? Be able to do more at once?

for basic home use prolly no good reason for it but for professional use in multiple industry's it makes a lot of sense.

here are 2 examples that I go through daily.

Web and application development
i makes web applications and most of my test servers are run in virtual machines on the same computer im working on them with. and it is very useful to be able to give a core for each VM and i sometimes have up to 8 VM's running at one time.

and my other example is when im working at the recording studio most audio processing eats up a huge amount of cpu or DSP core power depending on the setup, and all audio plugins run on there own thread so if your running the audio processing plugins in native mode and running right off the cpu even a 64 core cpu would be useful and i would still be able to take advantage of all it's cores.

Here's something to think about.

5 years ago, we didn't need dual core processors. With the way programs are made today, however, we do need them now. Quad Cores are already being utilized by programs and games, and more and more are coming to the market each year.

Do we need 6 core processors right now? No.

Will we need 6 core processors 10 years from now? Probably.

It's called technology advancement. Preparing for the future is never a bad thing. Think of these processors with more of an open mind rather than going "You guys are idiots if you buy one of these things!" ;)

I think in 10 years, octo-core will be the new thing

Everyone was right on about what they said, Professionals especially scientists require more processing power to handle their work. If you look at the speed of the cores like 4Ghz, it hasn't changed much from 10 years ago.

There is already a physical limitation to how many transistors they can fit on a single cpu die. Therefore its only logical that they have dual cores, quad cores, and hexa-cores.

As these become more affordable, more consumers buy them. Then companies can provide better games and applications. Games like BFBC2 already utilizes maximum cores on a CPU so its not useless.

Of course like passerby said, the average consumer doesn't need it. However, from a marketing standpoint... they will find a reason for you to need it. Like HD-TV and Blue-ray movies.

well i think in 10 years they will probably get rid of the ATX format its getting old i miss the days before ATX it was so simple. If you asked me 10 years ago when the 1 ghz processor came out it was amazing but, i figured in 1999 10 more years we would be beyond the 10ghz mark but, they went a different route. Its amazing what they do but, i'm not going 6 cores really no advantage for me over the phenom x4 965 for me. Games are starting to come out to take advantage of the 4 cores and simply put its going to get even more interesting. Its like making the jump from Unreal Tournament to Battlefield 1942 it was just amazing! I would like to see multiple processors make a comeback. Some where along the lines its interesting to find out what the future holds. Are we going to get smaller processors or are they going to get bigger like the old pentium blocks we used to run! Computers seem to always go backwards before they jump ahead.

It's called progress.

Progress = Good :)

You don't have to get a 6 Core, but a lot of people want power. And as much of it as possible.

You can drive to your friends house in 10 minutes, but does that mean we should not invent teleportation to get there instantly? (Just an example).

Should we not search for cleaner, more effective energy sources simply because what we have now is enough AT THE MOMENT? (Another example.)

Another thing, this technology nowadays has been around for sometime . Companies just will not release it right away or skip steps. This equals more money . You see the dual core , buy it. Then the Quad , buy it. Then oh, an i7 and you buy it.

in 10 years, i will be able to download stuff right into my eyes and watch vids, play games, and surf the web there. why do i still need a 6 core for? XD XD XD

but yea, 6 cores is a god send to the industry type guys. i know, because i have a few friends there and when i told them about it they started skipping. weird tho, how i knew before them lol

Remember just because you don't need it does not mean nobody else does. Calling quad core processors useless is ignorant. I am able to make full use of a quad core. Would a hexa core processor benefit me? I don't know, but I'm sure it would somebody.

so you can run crysis 3 :P

2 :P ... can't wait

Applications are now starting to take advantage of multicore processing. Something you might be able to relate to is that source engine games (Well as far as I am concerned, TF2 and DODS) give an option for multicore rendering. << Right there is a good way to have more cores.

Someone talked about Virtual Machines already, and I concur with them. Though I am short handed on RAM, but running a server with multiple machines on that server will need the extra couple cores to pick up the load.

And also with our generation, FASTER IS BETTER :D ... cept for sex

It will come faster than you think. Instead, look to 2011 as AMD is projecting to release Bulldozer: 32nm quad and octo core CPUs. A delay will at worst mean it launches in 2012, but thus far, you could be seeing 8 cores by next year.

And you know Intel won't sit idly by and let AMD hog the octo core spotlight ::wink::

ya but amd is putting a rush on the octo cores since they sat pretty idle when they had no answere to the pure powere the i7's could put out.

Person form 2006: WHY THE HELL would you need 2 cores, my pentium D is blazin fast ?!?!?!?!?!?!?

person from 2008: Why the heck are they making quad cores????!!! no apps support them!

person in 2010:

See what i'm getting at? Eventually 6-cores will be mainstream.

I use a 6 core computer at my work (Web Design / Architecture Drafting) and only a 2 core at my other job (Car Sales). I like my 6 core computer SO much better, able to load AutoCAD quickly and massive drawings are simple to do 3D rotate and render now! I love it personally.
