This is the second time it has happened, i leave my work rig folding 24/7 and this morning i took a look at the GPU clients log and there was an unstable machine message , core shutdown . The screen was filled with different colored pixels continuously moving around . Kinda freaky. I know its not the GPU overheating as it never gets hotter than 60c . The GPU is an EVGA 8800 GTS 512mb . Has anybody seen this before or had this problem ?

Yes. I had the same problem with my 8800 GTX. It died and had to be RMA'd shortly after it started doing this.

Just because the temperature is fine doesn't mean the card isn't overheating. I later found out that there were pockets of dust inside the heatsink of the card. It caused certain spots of the card to overheat and eventually fail.

I'm sorry to hear about this happening dude. Fortunately, it's an EVGA card. They usually have lifetime warranties on their products, so you should be able to get another one.

Looks like the GPU is failing. You could try a different video card if you've got one to make sure. You should also try to see if the card fails when playing a game (stressing it a different way).

Sweeeet . Well kinda, im sure the 8800 is no longer in production so we'll see what they send me. And i bought this card used, the seller claimed it was registered for the lifetime warranty.

I have played some TF2 on it at work, she works just fine . What i will do is take it home with me today take it apart and have a look. Can anybody identify if this is perhaps the GPU memory failing, or maybe the core itself ? Good thing i got an H55 board in-case she does fail, i still have some back-up.

The first instance occurred maybe a month ago and its been folding fine since. If everything goes bad, looks like the work machine gets a 260 and my home gaming rig gets a nice 470 :-)

After re-reading the warranty policy, it states that second hand products are not covered... however when i purchased it the seller did include the original receipt. If i did RMA it, im guessing it will be returned to whomever it was registered.

Im sorry to say your graphic card is broken!
My 500 dollar card broke like that as well, but it still had warranty. Got a new one without questions.

Seems to be a known factor for the 8800 Series....

Well im still using it right now, running dual monitors from it no problem , and the issue goes away after a reboot. Was folding on it again for about an hour , no problem. Think im gonna quit the folding on this card and see how long it will hold up for . So you guys think im pretty much screwed on the warranty if i cannot get in contact with the original purchaser? I wouldn't call it broken just yet... Call it Ready to die.

If it was registered with EVGA, then you'll have to log in on the account it was registered to in order to begin an RMA.

Cool thanks for all the info everyone, you have all been of great help and answered everything just as needed. Ill let you all know when shes finished :-(

Seems everyone has already answered your question, but yeah that's basically textbook artifacting on the desktop.

1. it's about a 50/50 chance it will work

2. you should look into a new card

That looks like Kimbo Slice's son or something hahaha

LOL you already know whats up BASS, the 8800 failure would give me a great excuse to go ahead and pick up that 470. Well, i bought the card since it was a crazy deal and was the same price as say a 7000 series card and i only purchased it for dual-monitor purposes as well as the fact i would get some good use from it Folding@home. Another plus is there are plenty of excellent games coming soon that are very demanding and the 470 would go awesome with em. Im even holding off on playing BFBC2 til i get one, purchased it with the promo code for $20 and haven't even got an hour into it. I just emailed the seller and am gonna wait on his reply to see what he has to say as far as RMA'ing it.

Has anybody here gone through the process of RMA after purchasing a used card ?

REFLEX - I have no idea how this is supposed to fix an already dying GPU lol. Gonna look into that a bit further for kicks. I cant cook a grilled cheese how do you expect me to cook a GPU lol. I was kidding about the Grilled cheese btw , i use 3 different types of cheese and triple deck em.

I already know what GPU im going for , might go ahead and get the 470 now and wait for the 8800 to die, use the 260 in my work rig and fold on it. Then when i can find a steal on a 9800 series, sell off the 260.

1. yes he looks like kimbo's son

2. what's your PPD?

3. What team

4. Baking it reflows the solder in the card, and gives it a chance at life.

5. 470 cant fold :'(

whatchu talkin about, willis?

470 cant fold ?!?!!?

I would like to see where this information comes from. Dude i fold for eGO ! Team 169285 Currently ranked #2 just below BFM who has retired from our team.

I have never really taken an accurate PPD as sometimes i will come home and see my machine has restarted automatically from Windows update , and i dont have it running 24/7 on my gaming rig. I will get an accurate PPD tomorrow.

lol willis...

1. use this to monitor ppd:
http://www.overclock.net/overclock-net-folding-home-team/698405-guide-complete-hfm-guide-windows-7-a.html

2. Yes the 470 cannot fold until stanford releases GPU3.

3.I might come back to team eGO, right now im folding for Overclock net. (number 8 ranked team in the world)

I might CPU fold for OCN, then use the 9800GX2 i have coming for eGO. Then switch it to OCN for competitions.

I'm coming for you dbee watch out.

EDIT: I'm pushing 10k with my 1055T not overclocked. I was getting about 14k with it oc'ed to 3.2

EDIT EDIT:

from what i hear the GX2 will be about 10k ppd

btw my brother is bearboy99. He's slowly catching you with his single GT 240 lol.

Nice monitor, thanks bro. So we will be able to fold on the 470, just not yet. Any idea when the GPU3 will be released. Just one problem Reflex, i've got 2 i7's that will run about 35 hours total a day combined as well as an i3 that all will run @ 4ghz with very very comfortable temperatures that are not folding at the moment. What GPU's are you currently running?

Lol yes or lil bro is catching up, slowly . He is folding and and thats what truly matters.
