Well I just have one, important question for you TF2 Vets out there. I mean those who can easily rack up WAY over 10 kills in one life.

Do you have any tips for a newbie like me?
When I mean newbie, I mean this is my first multiplayer FPS (FPS similar to Halo, CoD, etc), and my first true computer game. Meaning for 20 years, I been a console gamer.

I had TF2 for 4 months on XBL and a month for PC and I was wondering if anyone had any advice on getting better?

And yes, I do read the TF2 Wikis, watch other people and a lot of the basics I learned through trail and error.
 
Just get in the game, man. Study the classes, know their strengths and weaknesses. Stick with a class that you personally enjoy playing, because you're more likely to get better at it if you like that class.

Study what other great players do that use your class (i.e. study Frisky Dingo if you like spy, or Kunai if you like Soldier, etc). Learn from them.

One thing you have to remember is that each map presents new challenges. Stick on a 24/7 server until you begin to get better then move to others. eGO has several 24/7 servers (such as Black Mesa, my personal fav) that you can practice on and that people will help you out.

Hope that helps. Keep in mind that TF2 is not a normal shooter - it is not strictly accurate with the weapons and such. Therefore, LEARN how the weapons work in TF2.

I will add that even having the game since it was released, there are still some classes I am terrible at. DOn't get discouraged. ;)
 
Yea, definantly watch other players. See what they do that works, and what they do that doesn't. For stuff like rocket jumping, spy tactics, ect... Practice some on a server you create until you are comfortable with the timing. Being able to do things, even if under ideal circumstances, will make doing them in game much easier. Also, don't get frusterated. If one tactic stops working, try something different. You will likely have more deaths than kills at first, but you will improve much more rapidly than using the same tactics all is the time.

For the Demo always remember his was originally a defense class so this means the best way to rack up kills is by guarding something like a CP or the flag. The eyelander is great but, he's a defender his stickies are a menace if done correctly, also the pipebomb can do damage by placing them near someone and the reason why I use it is because it bounces of stuff prefect for around corner kills, make traps are he's specialty. Always remember that the gun arcs no matter what.

On blackmesa, the over powered class is the Demo with shield and eyelander. why? all the long walkways make the charge much easier, rack up heads and do some owning =]
 
Get to know the maps, i recommend cp_dustbowl, that is a good simple map to learn.

Get to know the classes, the pros/cons about each one. And find which one you enjoy playing the most and just play it.

Example:

If you love playing scout but hate playing soldier.. don't play soldier! I have heard of people playing the "good" classes. And then they just don't play as well, don't play what everyone else plays, because that won't help you or your team.

I don't have any advice to new PC gamers, so good luck is all i have to say.

This. Watch what other players do, what works, and what doesn't. Don't be afraid to retreat to live another day.
 
All good ideas, but it is best to remember that this game is called Team Fortress 2 for a reason. For any new guy who wants to learn basics stick with a group and learn to attack as a group. It will keep you alive longer as well as give you more kills and assists. Learn when to use your 2nd weapon and your melee weapon, it will also keep you alive longer.
 
Be sure to follow Frisky around when he's cloaked, to keep him safe ;)
 
Well first off, you want to beat this game in expert mode! You can't just expect to rip up a pub without beating expert mode in single player :|...COME ON! That's like...like..someone buying call of duty for the multiplayer PSSSH WHO BUYS CALL OF DUTY FOR THE MULTIPLAYER...LOLOLOL!

On a serious note <3 if you want to just rack up 10 kills....without the need of skills follow these steps:
1) Join 2fort
2) Go PIE-roh
3) Spy check eeeeeeverything...EVEEEEERYTHING...EVEN...the cow...even people with mics' symbols on their head.
4) If you take .5 or more dmg...run to the nearest spawn and touch the closet
5) Repeat 3
6) ???
7) Profit
8) If you fail...do not be afraid to rage...

the rage will you make strong...join the darkside.

I think you're setting the bar a bit too high. The only person who plays on our servers and has a KDR substantially over 10 is Purple Huskies. He plays only engi. With 1 or 2 exceptions, anyone with a decent number of kills has a KDR under 10. I know there's a lot of variables in this and people can go blah blah and argue this forever. I'm just saying.

I don't think he's aiming to sustain a 10:1 KDR...I think he just wants to get 10 kills in one life.

To put it bluntly, practice. You haven't been playing PC games very long, so you can't expect to just come in and dominate like with console games. The 2 are entirely different. For as long as you have been playing I wouldn't expect you to be very good at PC games

Everyone is bad when they start. Even the pros if you asked them would say when they played their first few months would say they weren't very good.
 
Just know where people are going to come from. When you play a lot you start to realize what directions people tend to come from.

Use corners to your advantage. The less you get hurt, the more bullets/rpgs you'll be able to throw at your opponent.
 
just get to know the maps plain and simple, on maps i play alot like backmesa and dustbowl i can rack up over 20 kills per life but if you but me in a map i dont know and dont like im lucky to keep a 1:1 kdr
