Weird lag issues

Lately ive had really strange lag issues while playing DOD. i get random lag spikes that last from a couple seconds to maybe a few minutes, or to the point i just have to quit playing. It seems that the only place i dont lag is on orange maps, so im guessing it has to do with the fact that orange maps are as detailed? I also lag right when i join servers, and sometimes its so bad i just get kicked off before i pick a team and class. When im not lagging my ping is like 60ish, and then it spikes up to 200 to even 500. I have no idea why it does this, is there anything i can do that doesnt involve buying new stuff. I dont know if it will help but here are my computer specs from xfire:

Manufacturer: Compaq Presario 061
Processor: AMD Athlon(tm) XP 3200+, MMX, 3DNow, ~2.2GHz
Memory: 512MB RAM
Hard Drive: 160 GB
Video Card: NVIDIA GeForce4 MX 4000 (Microsoft Corporation)
Monitor: Plug and Play Monitor
Sound Card: Realtek AC97 Audio
Speakers/Headphones:
Keyboard: USB Root Hub
Mouse: USB Root Hub
Mouse Surface:
Operating System: Windows XP Home Edition (5.1, Build 2600) Service Pack 2 (2600.xpsp_sp2_gdr.070227-2254)

any help/ideas are greatly appreciated, i can only play orange maps for so long ^^

I suspect that you are right about the less detailed orenge maps. For more help please provide the following information:

What are your video settings which you are trying to run the game at, such as screen resolution, textures, shadows and etc. This can be founs by clicking options, and then selecting the video options tab. You may have to click advanced to see the further video options. Take note that an asterisk will appear next to the item that steam thinks you should be running at. I reccomend you select settings at or below thiese reccomendations and never above.

Also go into the console and type "net_graph 3" and please tell us your FPS, in, out, choke etc while trying to play on a non orenge map durring a time when your lagg is the worst.

With this information I believe we can fix you up.

get more ram and a better video card if possible. but if you do so try to make sure they will work with ur mother board and you can cool them off ur vid card is A BIT out dated

If you never got these lag spikes before , then I doubt you need new hardware.

Try going into safe mode , and doing a virus and spyware scan. Delete anything you find. Either way , this will help your PC.

Now , set everything on the lowest possible setting , and try to play. Your Upload and download speed seems good for the average broadband , but , if you rent a modem , it can't hurt to ask for a new one.

Also , if none of these work , try applying Artic Silver thermal CPU paste to your CPU. And to any other heatsinks , if you want , just make sure to ground yourself with something like an anti static wristband.
