Hey, looks like I won't be able to play TF2 for a few days.

Both of my computers are totally messed up and I'll have to spend a while trying to fix them. I got something nasty while looking at craigslist today... I wasn't too terribly concerned when I got a virus but it ended up disabling all kinds of system tools like getting into the registry and even stops me from starting task manager. I don't even want to try getting rid of this thing, I'm just going to back up the rest of my stuff onto my old busted up harddrive and reformat.

I've got some work to do on this computer, too. I'm running Fedora on my second one, but I managed to screw it up so bad I can basically only run the terminal. (I'm running firefox remotely, lulz). I don't have install discs to put windows on here and I'm not sure how I'm going to download a copy from microsoft since I can't even run a browser from my own machine.

I just wanted to let you guys know what's going on since I have a bounty on me and all. I'm not trying to avoid playing. Also wanted to warn you that I got this nasty thing from craigslist.

Try booting into safe mode and then running system restore. That sounds slot like a simple but annoying virus I know of. It pretty much locks down the computer, but it doesn't start in safe mode and can be removed from there.

Sorry, didn't mean to start an annoying going to be gone thread. I guess I was thinking that I'm not willingly going to be away, but you're right, it's the same thing. I won't make another thread like this. Thanks for pointing that out to me, though.

On the bright side though I found an old copy of Ubuntu behind the shirts in my closet (kind of like buried treasure? ) so at least now I can run firefox.

Get Malwarebytes and save it to a disk. http://www.malwarebytes.org/ Re-start in safe mode and run the malwarebytes. That should remove whatever is blocking all your access to stuff. Then run your anti virus to make sure everything else is clean.

This is what I did when I got the same type of nasty, and It worked.

Never hurts to try.

I know exactly what the issue with your computer is.

You beat the evil Dr.Doom on the 2fort server.
Then to get his revenge he sent out assassins!!
But you being the player you are destroyed them from afar! (Well done by the way)
Then he got desperate and sent a virus to attack you. Its okay though because viruses can only reproduce if they have a living host. Get some immunity meds and get back to the game!!
