Lag reduction by setting your DOD:S video graphics lower, tuning up your PC and connection maximization.
Tuning up your PC is written with Windows Vista/XP in mind, this might work with earlier versions of Windows, and I have no idea about linux or mac.
Why do these steps? Because after playing DOD:S for a while, it tends to slow down, get laggy, and even make it impossible to play DOD.
First lets talk about connection maximization, its quite easy, all you have to do is download the TCP optimizer from this link http://www.speedguide.net/downloads.php
Save the file in a location where you will remember it. As you won't be installing anything and if you forget where it is you have to re-download it.
Now open the TCP Optimizer and then go click "Optimal Settings" at the very bottom of the page. Then Click apply changes (You will be forced to restart your computer) once you boot the machine back up, we can move on to the next step.
How big is your video card? 32MB 64MB 128MB? This amount of GPU is not enough to run DOD:S in high graphics and resolution. In fact, it takes a 256MB graphics card to run it in high graphics and resolution. Now to set your graphics down go to Options - Video - Advaned and set all settings to as low as they can go. Or set them to how well your GPU can support it. Then hit apply.
(DOD:S's graphics will worses, but it optimizes how smooth your computer runs DOD:S)
Now the final step. Defragmenting your system using Disk Defragmenter. Now the defragmenter that is built into Windows Vista/XP will optimize your computer and DOD:S but its not the best defragmenter by any means. If you want to fork out a little more money, you can buy Diskeeper for about $30 at diskeeper.com but if you can't afford, or you just don't want too thats fine. Now go to Start - All Programs - Accossories - System Tools - Disk Defragmenter. In windows XP you will have to select and defragment one harddrive at a time, Vista you just hit "Defragment Now", pretty convienient Vista users
BUT PLEASE NOTE: WINDOWS VISTA DEFRAGMENTER CAN TAKE *HOURS* TO DEFRAGMENT, DEPENDING ON HOW MUCH PROGRAMS AND FILES YOU HAVE ON YOUR COMPUTER AND HOW LONG YOU HAVEN'T DEFRAGMENTED. So you might want to do the defragmenting section while you are sleeping, or working.
Now in the system tools folder where Disk Defragmenter is located you will see a program called "Disk Cleanup", you can run this if you want, but I wouldn't, as it will delete Temporary Files, deleting these files, is utterly pointless, as they will take longer as it recollects them, and fragment the harddrive. So I would just keep them.
Doing these steps optimizes your computers performance and DOD:S.
