Okay, I was wonder if i would be able to.

And if so post it here and the stuff I'll need.

I have some older computers and old HD with windows on it.

I was wondering if i would able to back up my stuff on that old pc and be able to grab it on my windows 7 computer, Since my computer tends to get hit sometimes and forces me to redo the whole windows installer.

so there you go, Thankyou!

You could backup your stuff there. You'd be better off backing up to a Linux server.

Now is it really hard to make a Linux box?, Because this is my first time making a server box.

Now what stuff will i need to make this all work?

I've wanted to get some linux boxes going in my house, but I am pretty lazy getting to it. All I know to access files on a Linux box with a windows client, your gonna need a Samba client. Go ahead and start searching Ubuntu forums if you plan to go *nix.

Windows actually makes a server version for home users. It's called Windows Home Server. I used it a couple of times back when it was in beta and was pretty impressed.

Linux is good for server use, but if you don't know what you're doing, could leave you wanting to throw your computer out the window in frustration. Lots of things Linux are best done on the command line, and if you don't know much about Linux/Unix commands, then you're in for a treat.

If you can spend some time learning about Linux, it can be really powerful. It takes some getting used to though, as the best tools are usually command-line. Once you figure the stuff out, you can do some great things with it. Most of the documentation for the more popular tools are really helpful.

It took a little while, but I am pretty competent at using terminal now. I think having a mac helped, as I was able to quickly get into terminal and do various things to my system.

If you would like a fairly easy to use linux distro, Ubuntu is a pretty good choice. You can use it as a server and the UI is pretty good. Fedora Core is one of the best if you are serious about making a server.
